Game 58 lineups: Nats at Reds

CINCINNATI - The amazing run of Juan Soto continues.

Even in a 9-3 series-opening loss against the Reds Friday night, Soto delivered with a single, a double and a homer, finishing with two of the Nationals' three RBIs. The left fielder is hitting .533 (16-for-30) with three doubles, one triple, three homers, eight RBIs, six walks and 13 runs scored in his last eight games.

"He works on not only hitting but his overall game," said Nationals manager Davey Martinez. "He's getting better. I know he went through a stretch at the beginning of this year but he kept working, kept working.

Soto-Poses-Gray@PHI-sidebar.jpg"His big thing is taking his walks and staying in the middle of the field. When he stays in the middle of the field he's really good and he's really, really smart. He watches a lot of video, I know. He knows what he has to do and he makes in-game adjustments that are better than any young player that I have ever seen."

Soto has hit safely in a career-high 14 straight games, going 25-for-53 (.472) with seven doubles, one triple, four homers, 14 RBIs, eight walks and 15 runs scored. If he continues the hit streak tonight, Soto would have the longest hitting streak by a player under the age of 21 since José Reyes (17 games, July 30-August 18, 2013). The record for the longest hitting streak by a player under 21 years old is 22 games by Edgar Rentería (July 25-August 16, 1996).

Today's matchup features right-hander Erick Fedde (1-0, 2.18 ERA) against former Nats starter Tanner Roark (4-3, 3.20). Roark said he might have to control his emotions a bit against his former club and a lot of his good friends.

Fedde is making his third consecutive start after making his first five appearances out of the bullpen this season, and has allowed only one earned run in his last 10 innings. This is his first career start against the Reds.
