Gausman leaves with lead (free baseball!)

Orioles manager Buck Showalter let rookie Kevin Gausman start the top of the sixth inning, but he had left-hander Brian Matusz ready in the bullpen. Gausman was going to face two more batters before David Ortiz came to the plate. Shane Victorino flied out and Dustin Pedroia singled. With Ortiz representing the tying run, Showalter brought in Matusz for one of the more favorable matchups in baseball. Ortiz was 1-for-15 with 10 strikeouts against Matusz. Make it 1-for-16 after Ortiz popped up. Mike Carp struck out to end the inning. He's 0-for-2 with two strikeouts against Matusz. Showalter probably knew it all along. Matusz has now stranded 20 of 22 inherited runners this season, and 34 of 36 since moving to the bullpen last summer. Gausman allowed two runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings, with no walks, five strikeouts and two home runs. He threw 91 pitches, 56 for strikes. Gausman is in line for his first major league win. It's up to the bullpen. Gausman now has six walks and 20 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings. Manny Machado singled again in the bottom of the sixth. He was tied with Miguel Cabrera for the most hits in the majors with 91. He also has 21 multi-hit games in his last 47 games. Boston pitchers have hit three Orioles tonight - Chris Davis, Adam Jones and Nate McLouth. Update: There goes Gausman's chance at his first major league win. The Red Sox loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh on three straight singles. Stephen Drew's sacrifice fly brought in one run, and Jacoby Ellsbury grounded into a 4-6 force that tied the game. Before tonight, right-handers were batting .302 lifetime against Matusz, while left-handers were batting .214. All three singles to fill the bases came from guys batting from the right side, including two switch-hitters. Drew and Ellsbury bat from the left side. Ellsbury was ruled safe on a close play at first that brought Showalter out of the dugout. However, the MASN replay showed that umpire Cory Blaser made the right call. Ryan Flaherty made a wide flip to J.J. Hardy covering second base, which may have cost the Orioles a chance to turn the double play. Matusz has allowed six runs (five earned) and nine hits in his last three appearances covering three innings. Wieters threw out Ellsbury trying to steal to end the inning with Tommy Hunter on the mound. Tonight marks only the second time that three Orioles have been hit by pitches in a game since the start of the 2007 season. It happened on Sept. 13, 2010 vs. Toronto. Update II: No rain, no more regulation. The Red Sox finally brought in a right-hander after using three lefties. Junichi Tazawa pitched the bottom of the ninth and forced extra innings by retiring Hardy on a pop up after Wieters' two-out single. Wieters took second on Victorino's error in right field. Tommy Hunter was perfect for 2 1/3 innings, striking out two. Darren O'Day will work the top of the 10th.
