Gausman tosses scoreless inning (with pictures and video)

SARASOTA, Fla. - Kevin Gausman worked only one inning today, throwing 10 of his 16 pitches for strikes by my unofficial count in a scoreless first.

Gausman's fastball touched 96 mph on multiple pitches. He allowed a leadoff single to Anthony Gose before getting a double play grounder from Jose Iglesias and striking out J.D. Martinez, who froze on a 96 mph heater.

J.J. Hardy reached on an infield hit in the bottom of the first, but he was stranded. Adam Jones popped up and Matt Wieters lined out.

Tigers first baseman Aaron Westlake plowed into Jones before catching the pop up down the line. Jones was slow to get up and limped to the dugout, but he looked fine while jogging to center field in the top of the second.

He also looked back at Westlake before reaching the dugout steps. Strange play and potentially serious.

Wieters was burned by the shift. Third baseman Nick Castellanos made the catch in shallow right field.

With T.J. McFarland on the mound, Orioles third baseman Manny Machado committed a throwing error after fielding Castellanos' chopper to open the top of the second. Machado charged the ball and sailed it high and wide of first baseman Chris Davis.

Bryan Holaday and Daniel Fields singled with one out to load the bases, but McFarland struck out Hernan Perez and retired Andrew Romine on a fly ball to center.
