Givens could be headed to Aberdeen to play SS

When the Short Season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds begin a new season of New York-Penn League play next Friday, there is a good chance that Mychal Givens will be their starting shortstop. The 21-year-old Givens, the Orioles' second-round pick in 2009, would move to Aberdeen from Single-A Delmarva for two main reasons. One, it would give him a chance to play short. He's been playing at second base for Delmarva this year with Manny Machado first and later Jonathan Schoop playing at short for the Shorebirds. Secondly, Givens has struggled at bat this year in the South Atlantic League. In 54 Shorebirds' games, Givens is batting .202 with no homers, 15 RBIs and a .504 OPS. He is batting .333 in eight June games. Some other pitchers that are expected to join Aberdeen from extended spring training include Jake Cowan, Aaron Wirsch, Matt Drummond, Travis Strong, David Baker and Alex Schmarzo. Right-hander Parker Bridwell, the Orioles' ninth-round pick in 2010, could move to Aberdeen from Delmarva when the IronBirds begin play. Conner Narron, the club's fifth-round draft pick in 2010, is also likely Aberdeen bound. Narron hit just .164 in 19 games last year and has not played yet this year for a full-season affiliate. Catchers Wynston Sawyer and Joe Velleggia should be joining the IronBirds along with outfielder Kyle Hoppy. Outfielder Glynn Davis of Baltimore, a player that was signed after the draft last year out of Catonsville Community College, is expected to play for the Gulf Coast League Orioles. Davis has been rehabbing a back injury. Check this blog later today: I'll be reporting from Frederick where the Keys have the best record in the Carolina Leauge at 38-23 and host Lynchburg today at 6 p.m. I'll get some injury updates and check in with some Keys players and coaches, plus get to see Bobby Bundy pitch tonight. Check here later for updates from Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick.
