Gonzalez appears headed to disabled list

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Miguel Gonzalez's start on Sunday is "definitely in jeopardy," and all signs point to the right-hander going on the disabled list with a strained right groin muscle.

Gonzalez said today that he's still sore after leaving last night's start in the fifth inning. No roster move is expected before Thursday's game.

Showalter said all of his relievers are available tonight, but he's working with a six-man bullpen and could use another arm before Brian Matusz comes off the suspended list on Sunday.

As for Sunday's starter against the Yankees, the candidates are Triple-A Norfolk right-handers Mike Wright and Tyler Wilson. Wright is scheduled to start Friday for the Tides, with Wilson going on Sunday.

Wright has to stay in the minors for a minimum of 10 days after being optioned on Friday unless he's replacing an injured player. Otherwise, he can't come back before Monday.

The Orioles could recall Wright as Gonzalez's replacement on the active roster, put him in the bullpen and start him Sunday if he isn't needed in relief.

If the Orioles put Gonzalez on the disabled list Thursday and recall left-hander Cesar Cabral, it would signal that Wilson has been chosen as Sunday's starter.

Make sense?

Either way, I'd expect Gonzalez to go on the disabled list before Thursday's game.

Left-hander Wesley Wright will pitch at extended spring training on Friday and head out on an injury rehab assignment.

Second baseman Jonathan Schoop slid for the first time today at extended spring training. He hasn't been cleared to play second base in games, but he's still expected to come off the disabled list before the All-Star break.

Showalter said Schoop is running straight ahead faster than before he sustained the knee injury.

Showalter also said surgery still isn't an option for Schoop.

"We're going to take this all the way," he said.

Schoop will come back to Baltimore and work out with the Orioles after extended spring training ends on Friday.

Kevin Gausman, who starts Thursday night at Double-A Bowie, said his right shoulder has never felt stronger.

The Yankees placed former Orioles reliever Andrew Miller on the 15-day disabled list with a strained flexor mass.
