Hammel gets a win, Orioles hit three homers to beat Yankees 5-3

The Orioles hit three solo homers and put last night's ugly loss behind them, beating the Yankees 5-3 today behind Jason Hammel at Yankee Stadium. The Orioles even this series at a win each and improve to 5-3 in American League East games and 6-5 overall. The Orioles hit Yankee starter Phil Hughes pretty hard and got to him for solo homers in three consecutive innings. Ryan Flaherty hit his first of the season in the second inning, Nick Markakis hit his second an inning later and Nolan Reimold hit his first in the fourth. The Orioles' three homers tied a season high. Nate McLouth went 3-for-5 with two doubles for the Orioles, who also scored on RBI groundouts by Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy. Matt Wieters was hitless and has just one hit over his last 23 at-bats. The Orioles had gone five games without producing 10 or more hits before getting 11 hits today. Hughes entered with a career 5.10 ERA against the Orioles and gave up nine hits and five runs over three innings. The Orioles had scored just 17 runs over their previous five games. Hammel picked up his second win. He pitched six innings and gave up eight hits and three runs (two earned) with one walk, four strikeouts and two home runs allowed, throwing 95 pitches. Coupled with Miguel Gonzalez's outing last night, this was the first time all year O's pitchers have produced back-to-back quality starts. Hammel is 2-1 with a 4.34 ERA. In 11 games against the AL East since joining the Orioles, Hammel is now 4-2 with an ERA of 3.19. Brian Matusz, Darren O'Day and Jim Johnson kept New York off the board over the last three innings. The Orioles 'pen has not allowed an earned run in 8 2/3 innings over the past three games and has an ERA of 0.69 over the past eight games. Tomorrow, the Orioles return to ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" for the first time since 2008 in the series finale at 8:05 p.m. Wei-Yin Chen (0-1, 3.75 ERA) pitches against Hiroki Kuroda (1-1, 6.75 ERA)
