Hammel's last two outings like day and night (updated)

In Jason Hammel's previous start, he lasted only two innings against the Boston Red Sox because he threw 39 pitches in the second and manager Buck Showalter didn't want to tax his arm. Tonight, he lasted 5 1/3 innings against the New York Yankees and is charged with two runs and five hits, with no walks and five strikeouts. He also hit a batter. Hammel threw 75 pitches through five innings, and Showalter sent him back out for the sixth. The first batter he faced, Alex Rodriguz, ran the count full before swinging through a 94 mph fastball. Mark Teixeira also ran the count full before lining a double into right-center field. Troy Patton replaced Hammel, and he let the inherited runner score on Raul Ibanez's single to right field. Ibanez homered off Hammel leading off the second inning. Hammel threw 89 pitches, 59 for strikes. His fastball topped out at 96 mph in the first inning. The Orioles lead, 3-2. Matt Wieters has tripled - right fielder Andruw Jones didn't have a real sense of urgency while chasing the ball - doubled and scored twice. Mark Reynolds has a double and two RBIs, and he scored in the fourth on Robert Andino's grounder. Nolan Reimold is 2-for-3. Rodriguez and Derek Jeter have committed errors tonight.
