Hearing from Flaherty and Wieters (tonight's start delayed)

Cuban left-hander Ariel Miranda passed his physical and signed a minor league deal with the Orioles.

Miranda compiled a 22-25 record with a 3.78 ERA over 80 appearances (64 starts) in seven seasons in the Cuban National Series. His strikeout/walk ratio was 3.04 (73/24) in 2013, his final year.

More on that later.

The tarp remains on the field following a light rain at Camden Yards. The game won't start on time, which delays Ryan Flaherty's first start with the Orioles since May 11.

Flaherty came off the disabled list today after playing in two injury rehab games at Triple-A Norfolk.

"My groin feels good," he said. "I went down to Sarasota rehabbing and I pretty much did everything I could possibly do. Agilities forward, backward, sideways. Build confidence and get it better, and it feels 100 percent.

"My strength is a lot better this time than last time, so I was able to do a lot of strengthening and agilities and running, and pretty much every day I did that."

Flaherty thought he was fully recovered after the initial injury, but he had a setback and returned to the disabled list.

"Actually, I tried to do a lot of defensive back drills like a football player would do, try to simulate agilities and stuff. And obviously on the baseball field, a lot of ground balls up the middle. And I was able to go 100 percent and I feel good," Flaherty said.

"I don't really know where I felt it before. I was able to do every move 100 percent, so I'm ready to go."

Matt Wieters caught nine innings at Double-A Bowie last night and went 2-for-4. He also threw out a runner attempting to steal.

"Felt good. Thought yesterday went well," he said. "I felt good when I woke up this morning. Hopefully, keep feeling like we did yesterday and we should be good to go."

"I think it's a kind of, look at the minor league schedules," he said. "I've looked at it a little bit. I think Frederick is at home Monday and Norfolk doesn't get back until Tuesday, so it's kind of a matter of I guess how we feel Thursday and Saturday, whether we'll try and hit Frederick and Norfolk or do one or the other."

Wieters is eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list on June 4.

"It kind of depends on how the matchups go. I think somewhere around there is a good bet," Wieters said.

"I'm ready to go. Yesterday, I was able to get a little bit of a heartbeat going playing under the lights again at Bowie. I've been waiting for almost a year now to get back out there."

Wieters isn't serving as the designated hitter tonight and may skip that role during his rehab assignment.

"I actually saw the ball real well yesterday and it's kind of more of if I feel like I need more swings and more timing. But I feel like I got a lot of at-bats down in Florida, where I feel like the timing's pretty good," he said.

"I saw the ball well last night at Bowie. So if we see it like we did last night Thursday, we'll probably just keep the catching thing going."

Manager Buck Showalter indicated that Wieters might catch every other day after coming off the disabled list.

"Off feel, and it's going to be a slow process," Wieters said. "I've sort of come to terms with that. It's not going to be going back to catching four, five days in a row. It's all about feel.

"The every other day thing feels good now, and as soon as that little bit of soreness that we have in between is gone, we'll start by picking up a ball the day after I catch and go from there. Every other day is better than not playing at all for me right now."

Wieters took batting practice today at Camden Yards to "get a little sweat going." He won't throw in between games.

"It's something to where I can foresee soon in the future where we will pick up a ball and just start light and go from there," he said. "Right now, it's kind of let it rest and see how it feels tomorrow."
