Henderson and Gonzalez added to alternate camp site

The 60-man player pool is down to one open spot.

The Orioles announced today that they added infielder Gunnar Henderson and left-hander Brian Gonzalez to the group that's working out and playing intrasquad games at the alternate camp site in Bowie.

Henderson, 19, was an anticipated arrival based on his prospect status. The Orioles selected him in the second round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of John T. Morgan Academy in Alabama and assigned him to the Gulf Coast League, where he slashed .259/.331/.370 with five doubles, two triples, a home run, 11 RBIs and 11 walks in 121 plate appearances.

MLBPipeline.com ranks Henderson, a shortstop, as the No. 6 prospect in the organization and Baseball America places him seventh in the group.

He's headed to Bowie in order to continue his development after the minor league season was canceled.

The Orioles made Gonzalez their first pick in the 2014 draft, but he was chosen in the third round out of Archbishop McCarthy High School Florida. They forfeited their first two selections after signing free agents Ubaldo Jiménez and Nelson Cruz.

Gonzalez, 24, was viewed as a starter initially but has been moved to the bullpen, where he made 17 of his 18 appearances last summer at Double-A Bowie. In 24 total games in the minors, he posted a 3.38 ERA and 1.013 WHIP with 53 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings.

Gonzalez, who's never pitched above the Double-A level, is 31-35 with a 4.10 ERA and 1.415 WHIP in six minor league seasons.

The Orioles could view Gonzalez has an option for their bullpen later in the summer. He provides another left-hander after the Richard Bleier trade, but his inclusion in camp hadn't been expected with such limited space.

Outfielder Heston Kjerstad, this year's first-round pick, remains on the outside.

Additional room could be created later by putting a player on waivers.

The Bowie camp is loaded now with the organization's top prospects, including catcher Adley Rutschman, pitchers Hunter Harvey, Grayson Rodriguez, DL Hall, Michael Baumann, Dean Kremer, Keegan Akin and Bruce Zimmermann, infielder/outfielder Ryan Mountcastle and outfielder Yusniel Diaz.

Harvey is on the injured list and working his way back from a sore right elbow/forearm.
