Well, in the end, the Orioles did take Oklahoma high school hurler Dylan Bundy with the fourth pick in tonight's first round.
Bundy is an 18-year-old right-hander out of Owasso (Okla.) High near Tulsa. This year, he went 11-0 with an 0.20 ERA. In 71 innings, he walked just five and fanned 158. He pitched one no-hitter and six one-hitters.
Now there are two Bundys on the O's farm. His brother, Bobby, was drafted in round eight in 2008 and now pitches at Single-A Frederick.
Baseball America's Jim Callis raved about Dylan Bundy.
"Some scouting directors think he's the best pitcher in the draft, even better than all these college guys - and it's an exceptionally deep college draft," Callis said.
"We have him No. 2 on our prospect list, ahead of all the college pitchers and you could argue he's No. 1. If you are worried about a high school pitcher as a top pick, I would tell people this guy is so exceptional it's almost like he's a college pitcher. He's not just some guy that is raw and throws hard and you wonder about his other pitches. Dylan Bundy can do it all; his resume is ridiculous."
ESPN's Keith Law knows Bundy doesn't have classic 6-foot-4 size for a pitcher and some list him at 6-foot and others at 6-foot-1. His lack of height is no issue, Law said.
"There are two things scouts are concerned about. That shorter pitchers allegedly get hurt more and I don't see that as true," Law said. "Another concern is can the pitcher generate downhill plane on his fastball. I think if a pitcher is 5-10, it's more legit. At 6-foot, you can still get downhill plane and Bundy does. His mechanics are great and he can really use his lower half. My opinion, Dylan Bundy does it the right way."
Callis provided this scouting report on Bundy.
"He's a 92-95 (mph) guy that touches 98 and maybe flashes triple digits every once in a while. His hammer curveball, you could argue might be better than his fastball. He's got a cutter that really at times is almost like a 92 mile per hour slider. He has an advanced feel for a changeup with a very clean delivery," Callis added.
