Home run barrage to begin game (Braves win 11-10)

Offense for both teams is being ignited quickly in the series opener.

The most surprising moment in the first inning was seeing Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg allowing back-to-back homers.

Ender Inciarte led off the game with a single for the Braves. With one out, Nick Markakis took a 1-0 offering over the fence in left. It was only his second homer of the season and the two-run shot gave the Braves a 2-0 lead.

Matt Kemp followed with another homer, his 11th on the season. Suddenly, the Braves led 3-0.

Braves right-hander Mike Foltynewicz was hittable in the bottom of the first.

Turner-Swings-Blue-Overhead-Sidebar.jpgTrea Turner led off with a solo homer, his sixth of the season. It was the second game in a row the Nats led off the game with a round-tripper. Brian Goodwin's homer Sunday gave the Nats a short-lived 1-0 lead on the Rangers.

Bryce Harper walked and, with two outs, Adam Lind singled him to third. Matt Wieters followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2.

Strasburg bounced back well in the second inning, striking out a pair in a 1-2-3 frame.

Goodwin homered to right in the second to tie the game at 3-3.

The Nationals took the lead later in the inning. The rally continued with singles by Turner and Daniel Murphy and a walk to Harper. Anthony Rendon brought Turner home with a sac fly RBI.

After two innings, the Nationals have the lead 4-3.

Update: The Braves cranked their third homer of the game in the third. With two men on, Matt Adams launched a three-run shot for his eighth homer of the season. Atlanta retakes the lead 6-4.

Strasburg had allowed six homers in 12 previous starts this season before tonight, never more than a single homer in a start so far this year.

In the bottom of the third, Wieters singled and Goodwin doubled. With Wieters on third and less than two outs, Strasburg's grounder to second base scored a run.

After three innings, the Braves lead the Nationals 6-5.

Update II: The Nats answered again with four runs in the fourth. Harper started it all with his 16th homer, tying the game at 6-6. After a Murphy single, Inciarte lost Lind's high fly ball to center field and let it drop for a double. Murphy scored from first. Michael A. Taylor singled to score Lind. Goodwin singled to score Taylor from first after Markakis dove and missed a sinking liner in right field.

The Nats have scored at least one run in every inning and have 13 hits. Foltynewicz lasted 3 1/3 innings and surrendered eight runs.

After four innings, the Nationals lead the Braves 9-6.

Update III: Strasburg lasts five innings, his shortest stint of the season, allowing six runs on seven hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts. Strasburg threw 100 pitches, 66 for strikes. The 10 strikeouts mark the 33rd time (4th this season) Strasburg has reached double-digit punchouts in a start.

After five innings, the Nats still lead by three runs.

Update IV: Adams hit his second homer of the game, this one off of Jacob Turner, to begin the eighth for the Braves. Later, Rio Ruiz doubled and Dansby Swanson was walked. Enny Romero hit pinch-hitter Danny Santana with a pitch. An Inciarte sac fly cut the lead to one run.

Matt Albers managed to induce a groundout to end the rally.

After 7 1/2 innings, the Nationals cling to a 9-8 lead.

Update V: In the ninth, Albers allowed two walks and then a three-run shot to Tyler Flowers as Braves rallied again for an 11-9 lead.

Facing Jim Johnson in the bottom of the ninth, Taylor doubled on a blooper just inside the right field line. Goodwin struck out when the home plate umpire Joe West ruled he swung at strike three. Pinch-hitter Stephen Drew also struck out. Turner singled to left to score Taylor, cutting the Braves lead to 11-10.

Harper's high drive to center was caught by Inciarte to end the game.

The Nationals have matched a season-long losing streak at four games.

Final score: Braves 11, Nationals 10.
