Homer happy: O's hit six homers, Machado with two, in 11-3 win

When Orioles starting pitcher Chris Tillman allowed three runs in the first inning today against Oakland, the Orioles knew they would have to come from behind. No one knew they'd hit five homers in the first four innings. Then get a grand slam several innings later.

Manny Machado hit a two-run homer in the first and a grand slam in the eighth. He produced a career-high six RBIs as the Orioles bashed the Oakland A's 11-3 in front of 43,690 at Camden Yards. Machado has three career grand slams, two this year and now has seven career multi-homer games. He is now batting .350 with nine homers and 22 RBIs.

The Orioles win this series and are 18-12 through 30 games. They completed a 6-4 homestand and are 13-5 at home. They've won seven of their last eight games versus Oakland.

The homer rundown:

* Manny Machado (No. 8), a two-run shot in the first inning.
* Pedro Alvarez (No. 2), a solo shot in the second.
* Jonathan Schoop (No. 5), a solo shot in the second.
* Mark Trumbo (No. 9), a two-run blast in the third.
* Joey Rickard (No. 3) a solo shot in the fourth.
* Manny Machado (No. 9), grand slam in the eighth.

The game got so out of hand after the Machado slam that Oakland brought in catcher Josh Phegley to pitch. He fanned Adam Jones and got Trumbo to pop up to end the eighth.

Alvarez and Schoop connected with back-to-back home runs and it's the fourth time the Orioles have done that this season.

The Alvarez blast went onto Eutaw Street, his first career Eutaw Street home run. It was the 83rd hit there in Camden Yards history and 35th by an Oriole. The last Oriole to do it before today was Chris Davis on Sept. 14, 2015, also against Oakland.

The O's had six homers for the game is a new season high, one more than the five they hit April 15 at Texas. Coming into this game they had hit just one homer the last four games and three in six games. The A's six homers allowed was their most given up since April 19, 1994.

Schoop's homer extended his hitting streak to 11 games. He added two singles, went 3-for-4 and is now batting .257. Machado's homers were his sixth and seventh in 18 home games. He began today batting .420 at home with a slugging percentage of .797 and an 1.264 OPS. However, he had also gone eight games without a homer or RBI.

Rickard homered just twice last season at three levels of the minors in 396 at-bats. Today he hit his third in the majors in his 110th at-bat.

Tillman meanwhile, did not allow a run after the first inning. He went 6 1/3 innings on the day permitting six hits and three runs with four walks and seven strikeouts. He improved to 4-1 with an ERA of 3.05, throwing 109 pitches. Over his last four starts, he is 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA.

Now the O's begin a brief road trip consisting of one series at Minnesota. On Monday night, Tyler Wilson (1-1, 3.04 ERA) pitches against Twins right-hander Jose Berrios (1-1, 6.75 ERA).
