As The Sun's Jeff Zrebiec tweeted earlier, third baseman Josh Bell will join the Orioles today from Triple-A Norfolk and replace Luke Scott on the 25-man roster.
Scott is headed to the disabled list, and possible season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum. That decision is pending.
The Orioles didn't need to keep a player in the minors for 10 days before recalling him again, since he's replacing an injured player.
Early speculation had outfielder Matt Angle being recalled. One outfielder replacing another one. And the Orioles don't like having Bell sit on the bench for long stretches. It's not necessarily good for his development.
So how will Bell be used here? Will he get some starts at third base? Will he serve as the designated hitter while Vladimir Guerrero remains on the disabled list? Will be sit on the bench for long stretches?
Manager Buck Showalter could shed some light on the subject later today when he meets with reporters.
Bell could return to Norfolk if Guerrero is activated Tuesday in Toronto. This roster is under so much construction, the batting helmets should be replaced by hard hats.
I mentioned Nolan Reimold in the subject line of this blog entry. I'm wondering whether Angle's absence is an indication that Reimold will get regular at-bats in left field.
The Orioles need to figure out whether Reimold can be the regular left fielder next season, or if they need to search for one over the winter. Scott no longer is in the picture in 2011, and he could be non-tendered.
The lineup hasn't been posted yet, but Reimold is expected to be in left field tonight. And he's also expected to start tomorrow's series finale.
Instant update: Bell is starting at third base tonight. Reimold is in left field and Mark Reynolds is serving as the designated hitter.
