Hunter Harvey named SAL All-Star Game starter, five Shorebirds make team
Orioles 2013 first-round pick Hunter Harvey will be the starting pitching for the Northern Division team in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game set for June 17 in Hickory, N.C.
Harvey heads a list of five Shorebirds named to the game this morning, and not only does he get to start this game, but he'll be pitching just 18 miles from his home in Catawba, N.C.
Harvey will be joined as a starter by Delmarva third baseman Drew Dosch and right fielder Mike Yastrzemski. Delmarva pitchers Sebastian Vader and Jimmy Yacabonis were also named to the Northern Division roster. Four of these players were 2013 O's draft picks.
This is the most Shorebirds named to the All-Star game since Manny Machado led a group of five that played in the 2011 game, which was hosted by Delmarva. The others to make it then were pitchers David Walters and Jake Pettit, infielder Ty Kelly and catcher Michael Ohlman.
The right-handed Harvey, taken with the 22nd overall pick last June, is 3-3 with a 1.68 ERA over 10 starts. In 53 2/3 innings, he has given up 31 hits with 20 walks and 64 strikeouts. He ranks first in the league in opponents' average (.170), second in strikeouts and WHIP and third in ERA.
Harvey has allowed one earned run or less in seven starts. He pitched to an ERA of 2.08 in five starts in April and that mark was 1.30 in five May starts.
Dosch, the O's seventh-round pick in 2013 out of Youngstown State, is batting .316 in 54 games with nine doubles, three homers, 24 RBIs and a .789 OPS. Dosch is batting .336 since May 1.
Yastrzemski, the Orioles' 14th-round pick last June out of Vanderbilt, is the South Atlantic League leader with eight triples and 11 outfields assists. In 53 games, the grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski is batting .303 with 12 doubles, six homers and 34 RBIs along with a .521 slugging percentage and .893 OPS. He had two bases-loaded triples Sunday for the Shorebirds.
Yacabonis, the club's 13th-round pick last summer out of St. Joseph's University, is 1-0 with an ERA of 0.00 and leads the league with 13 saves in 13 chances. Yacabonis has not been scored on this year over 20 innings. He has given up just six hits with 12 walks and 26 strikeouts. His batting average against is .097.
Vader, who turns 22 today, is tied for the league lead in wins. The right-hander is 7-2 with a 2.94 ERA in 10 starts. In 64 1/3 innings, he has walked 11 and fanned 46. Vader has pitched to an ERA of 2.00 over his past four starts.
The Shorebirds are having a very good season. Delmarva is 34-23 after going 21-9 in May. Delmarva has won 11 of its last 13 games.
From the better late than never department, Single-A Frederick shortstop Adrian Marin was named yesterday as the latest Carolina League Player of the Week. It is the first time that the Miami native has won such an honor in his pro career.
Ranked as the Orioles' No. 12 prospect by Baseball American, Marin hit .429 (9-for-21) over six games with one home run, seven doubles, 11 RBIs and one run scored. He drove in at least one run in five of the six games, while he set a new career-high with four RBIs on Friday night against Wilmington.
