Hutchison dominant in Toronto's 5-1 win over Orioles

He had not pitched that well recently and struggled at home this year. But right-hander Drew Hutchison has pitched well against the Orioles and he did again tonight. davis-swings-grey-sidebar.jpgHutchison pitched one-hit ball over 8 2/3 innings as Toronto beat the Orioles 5-1. He retired 22 consecutive batters before issuing a two-out walk in the ninth. Casey Janssen got the last out. Hutchison walked one and fanned eight, throwing 115 pitches. He improves to 8-9 with an ERA of 4.39. He retired the first four tonight, allowed a Chris Davis solo homer and then got the next 22. In four 2014 starts against the Orioles, Hutchison is 2-0 with an ERA of 0.98. In six career starts, he is 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA. For Davis, it was his 19th homer of the season. It was also his 21st against Toronto since 2012 and fifth this year. The O's were outhit 12-1. The Orioles fall to 64-49 and their first-place lead is cut to four games over Toronto. Coming into this start Hutchison had an ERA of 9.16 over his last four starts, allowing 26 hits in 17 2/3 inning. He was 2-5 with a 7.71 ERA in eight home starts. He shut down an O's team that had scored 16 runs on 28 hits with five homers the last two games. The Orioles scored 33 runs on 48 hits in their first four games this year at the Rogers Centre before tonight. Wei-Yin Chen took a five-start win streak into the game but took the loss. He went five innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, to fall to 12-4 with an ERA of 3.90. In two career starts against Toronto, Chen has allowed nine runs over 10 innings. Jose Bautista drove in three runs with a two-run homer (No. 22) in the second and an RBI double in the sixth. Toronto improved to 6-6 against the Orioles and 61-54 for the season. The Orioles fall to 34-24 on the road, 12-7 since the All-Star break and to 27-19 in AL East games. In the series finale on Thursday night, Miguel Gonzalez (5-6, 3.93 ERA) faces J.A. Happ (8-5, 4.25 ERA).
