Hyde adjusting bullpen usage today (O's lead 8-2)

DETROIT - Using nine relievers last night has forced manager Brandon Hyde to make a few adjustments for today's game against the Tigers.

The expanded roster doesn't solve every issue.

Hunter Harvey is available because Hyde kept him in the bullpen for an 8-4, 12-inning loss. However, he's going to avoid multiple relievers this afternoon while hoping for an extended appearance from starter Asher Wojciechowski.

"There's a lot of guys that I'm going to stay away from today," Hyde said. "Some guys went back-to-back and some guys have gone three out of four.

"If we were in a different situation pennant race-wise, things would change, but I'm going to give a lot of these guys a breather today and go with the other guys."

Left-hander Paul Fry took the loss last night, his ninth in 10 decisions, after working on consecutive nights. He won't be used today.

Shawn Armstrong and Mychal Givens also have worked on back-to-back nights. Givens surrendered Victor Reyes' two-out home run last night in the ninth inning that pushed the game past regulation.

Don't look for Armstrong or Givens today.

The bullpen allowed six runs last night, the last four on John Hicks' first career walk-off grand slam off Ryan Eades. The unit had permitted only one run in seven innings heading into the 12th, but now has registered a 3.13 ERA since Aug. 20 that ranks second in the majors.

Tigers starter Edwin Jackson's 14-team tour of the majors, the most in history, included three dismal seasons with the Cubs from 2013-15 after he signed a four-year, $52 million deal. The Cubs released him in July 2015 after he went 16-34 with a 5.37 ERA and 1.524 WHIP in 82 games.

Lost his spot in the rotation and on the team, but maintained his reputation as one of the really good guys in baseball. Hyde can offer confirmation.

"Most people that have been in the big leagues for a while are familiar with Edwin Jackson because he's been around," Hyde said. "I was fortunate to be with him for a couple years in Chicago and he's one of my top five teammates I've ever been around. He's a total pro and a class act and there's a reason why he's been around so long and people want to have him around and always give him an opportunity, because he's such a great guy.

"Takes the ball, never complains, never an excuse and competes. But hopefully we get him today."

Hyde isn't ready to announce his starters for the Blue Jays series that begins Tuesday night at Camden Yards. The first game is TBA, but Chandler Shepherd is going to make his first major league start after two relief appearances with the Orioles.

"We're going to give a couple guys, at least one other guy, a start here in the next week," Hyde said. "That TBA might be somebody from our bullpen."

Update IV: Hanser Alberto tied the game with two outs in the third with an RBI bunt single and Rio Ruiz followed with a two-run homer.
