Hyde on Kremer, Sceroler and celebrating Jackie Robinson Day

The 54 pitches thrown by Dean Kremer in Tuesday's doubleheader may not preclude him from starting again on short rest in Texas.

Manager Brandon Hyde is listing Saturday's starter as TBD, but Kremer is a possibility.

Kremer worked three innings in Tuesday's second game.

"We're considering Dean, as well as some other options," Hyde said this morning in his Zoom call with the media.

"We're going to talk it over a little bit more today and tomorrow, just because he only threw 54 pitches and he feels ready to go, so we're going to consider that."

Wade LeBlanc and Adam Plutko are two possibilities if Hyde holds back the rookie. He also could go with a bullpen game.

César Valdez is capable of covering a chunk of the innings when his closer duties are paused.

Rule 5 pick Mac Sceroler went on the 10-day injured list yesterday with tendinitis in his right shoulder. Hyde is optimistic that Sceroler's absence won't be prolonged.

"He's just got some shoulder soreness," Hyde said. "I think we're encouraged by the test results and that we're hoping it's not going to be too long."

Sceroler has made two appearances, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings in his major league debut in New York, and allowing three runs and five hits in one inning against the Red Sox on Sunday. He served up two home runs.

"He's a young guy that was trying to manage it," Hyde said. "He did come in after his outing and said it was a little tight."

The Orioles must keep Sceroler on the active roster for 90 days to remove his Rule 5 status. He can't be sent to the minors in 2021 unless on a rehab assignment.

"Last year, we had amazing conversations throughout the summer," Hyde said. "Our players were very vocal in the clubhouse, in meetings, got to hear everybody's different experiences, very powerful summer in a lot of ways, and that's carried over.

"Cedric (Mullins) actually talked to the team a little bit yesterday, we watched the Player Alliance video together in the clubhouse, and it brought back a lot of memories from last summer. And those are conversations that we're continuing to have, both individual and in small groups. I'm really just proud of how our players from last summer, how they opened up about everything, and they continue to.

"Cedric is really maturing, being more comfortable having conversations. DJ Stewart, Anthony Sanders in our coaches' room has been amazing when it comes to our relationships with all of our players. I'm just really proud of how we've handled everything and really proud of what goes on inside our clubhouse."

The video, narrated by Edwin Jackson, included clips from CC Sabathia and Curtis Granderson. The message included avenues to collectively help promote and support baseball in inner cities, reminders of how few Black players are in the majors and the reasons why.

"It's important for all of us to understand that, be educated on that and help out any way we can to grow this game in the inner cities," Hyde said. "It's so important for a lot of people in this room."
