Hyde on Machado, Rutschman and injured Orioles (O's down 8-3)

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde joked twice today about speeding up and concluding his pregame media session so everyone in the room could get the next guy.

Manny Machado drew a crowd in his return to Camden Yards and his session lasted about 11 minutes longer. Hyde was more of an opener, but only for today.

"I didn't get to see him play much to be honest with you. I saw him play a couple times interleague when we came here in '17," Hyde said. "I obviously watched him on TV a lot. Everybody knows he's incredibly talented, really athletic and can do so many things. He did a lot for the city of Baltimore and I understand that and I appreciate that. But I haven't seen him play a ton."

Hyde spent part of the day talking to catcher Adley Rutschman, the first overall pick who signed his contract yesterday. Rutschman had a nameplate above one of the lockers and took batting practice.

"I met him this afternoon, came in the office with Mike (Elias)," Hyde said. "He's an impressive young man. Sounds like he's ready to get started and we're looking forward to watching him play. Just impressed by our conversation. We talked for about 35-45 minutes and he seems like a great kid."

Hyde and others in the organization noticed a maturity that suggests Rutschman will be able to handle the pressure that comes with his draft status. That comes with fans suggesting he's the face of the rebuild.

"You can tell he's real excited and we're obviously looking forward to getting him going and watching him play," Hyde said.

"You just want him to go play. You want him to be a 21-year old and go develop and get as many at-bats as possible and get as many innings in and not worry about the pressure. It's really hard to do. (Kris) Bryant went through it. Bryant was a Golden Spikes guy and all everything coming into the draft and so I know he dealt with it early. Adley seems like he's mature like Kris was and will handle it well.

"You want him to go play and be normal."

John Means threw a side session today and is lined up to make a start this weekend against the Indians at Camden Yards. He's on the injured list with a strained left shoulder.

Josh Lucas, who's on the IL with a right shoulder strain, said he played catch for the first time yesterday and is close to getting back on a mound. Hyde said it could happen by Wednesday.

"He's going to throw a couple sides before we activate him," Hyde said, "but he seems like he's healthy and doing well. He should be not too long away, either."

Lucas said his shoulder "feels pretty close to normal" and the length of his inactivity feels longer because the team's been on the road.

Mark Trumbo has been receiving therapy for his knee at Johns Hopkins and said it's much better. He also said he'll reassess it "in a couple of weeks."

Ryan Mountcastle is playing left field tonight at Triple-A Norfolk for the first time in his career. Elias had mentioned a while back that the Orioles wanted to take a look at Mountcastle in the outfield.

Update: Hanser Alberto led off the first inning with a double and scored on Trey Mancini's single for a 1-0 lead.

Update II: Four straight hits off Jimmy Yacabonis with two outs in the second, including Fernando Tatis Jr.'s two-run homer, gave San Diego a 4-1 lead.

Update III: Machado homered on the first pitch thrown to him in the third inning. Padres 5, Orioles 1.

Update IV: Dwight Smith Jr. had an RBI double with two outs in the third, but was tagged out after rounding third base. Manuel Margot followed his two-run single in the second with a two-out solo home run off Josh Rogers in the fourth to give the Padres a 6-2 lead.

Machado added an RBI single for a 7-2 lead.

Update V: Francisco Mejía homered off Rogers in the fifth for an 8-2 lead.

Update VI: Richie Martin led off the seventh with a home run to reduce the lead to 8-3.
