Hyde on moves; hearing from Wynns, Ortiz and Kline (game update)

MINNEAPOLIS - On a day with a dizzying six Orioles roster moves, a player that is still here and never left is pretty important as well. Trey Mancini is not in today's lineup, but should be soon. He suffered a contusion on the index finger of his right hand when batting in the first inning on Saturday.

"Trey is day-to-day still," manager Brandon Hyde said. "He's pretty sore, but I think we got really lucky that it's not broken. But obviously got him in a bad spot and he's pretty sore. But he feels like he should be ready soon. The finger is always kind of tricky. But we're lucky it is not broken.

"He thinks he's going to be ready tomorrow or the next day. Tough kid. Real strong, tough kid to be able to hang in there after that and get a single. I'm hoping he is available really soon."

This morning, the Orioles placed right-hander Alex Cobb on the 10-day injured list retroactive to yesterday with a lumbar strain. They designated catcher Jesús Sucre for assignment and optioned right-hander Jimmy Yacabonis to Triple-A Norfolk. They recalled pitchers Branden Kline and Luis Ortiz and catcher Austin Wynns from Triple-A.

Sucre hit .210/.269/.242 with two doubles and three RBIs in 20 games. He threw out four of eight trying to steal and even pitched a scoreless inning.

"Been kind of a tough day," said Hyde. "We wanted to get Austin Wynns here. Suc has been awesome since he's been here. And he brings a ton on the field, he brings a ton in the clubhouse. So I really enjoyed having him. I hope that he gets a major league job. If not, I would obviously love to have him back and back up here. We're excited to have Austin here. At the same time, tough to see Suc go."

Hyde said he expected to have Wynns, who is starting today, and Pedro Severino share time at catcher.

Hyde said David Hess, who was available in the bullpen yesterday and warmed up, will take Cobb's rotation spot and pitch Wednesday in Chicago. Cobb returned to Baltimore, but will likely eventually head to Sarasota while on the IL.

On Cobb and if he will now need minor league rehab starts: "I think that his lower back is bothering him, and I think you could see he's not having the extension on his pitches that he would like and it's frustrating for him. It's probably leading to some other things. We felt like it was best to put him on the DL to give him some time. Let him heal up a little bit. Hopefully, it's not too long but we're going to miss him in the rotation.

"I think that all (rehab starts) depends on how long it will be. If it's obviously a substantial amount of time, then he's going to have to go face hitters and get a couple of rehab starts or whatever it may be. Think that how long it's going to be is still totally undetermined."

So the club may take some time now with Cobb?: "That was something we talked a lot about. When he comes back, I want him to be Alex Cobb, healthy Alex Cobb. I don't want to rush him at all. I want him to be full strength, feeling good physically and ready to pitch. So we're going to give him as much time as he needs."

Hyde on adding Kline and Ortiz: "We needed some arms. These guys are beating us up. And, you know, it's good to have a couple of fresh arms in here. Both guys are available to pitch today. So after the last couple of days we're just a little short in the bullpen. So decided to have Brandon and Louie here. They'll be available today."

Hyde on the constant shuffling of pitchers in and out of the bullpen: "I think that is a little bit where we are at. In this process that we're in, we're giving guys opportunities at the big league level and probably is going to be some movement. We'd love to get some length from out starters to limit the innings from the bullpen. We haven't done that a whole lot.

"Yeah, you might see a lot of movement. But I'd love to see guys establish themselves and be able to pitch in tight games and want the ball. Be bulldogs out of the bullpen. I'd love to see that. I'm waiting for guys to step up and fill that role."

Branden Kline on returning so soon and trying to stay: "It's just more about commanding my off-speed pitches. I was able to see here that guys can catch up to fastballs, especially when you put them in hitter's counts. This past week, I went back to Triple-A and worked on that every single day. Just waiting for the opportunity to come back here and it came sooner than I thought. With this organization there is a ton of opportunity. I'm here to show I can stick around."

Kline on the emotion of his major legue debut last weekend and moving forward after that: "After the game, just being able to take it all in (was nice). But when I went back to Norfolk, I focused on staying up here. It was a surreal moment for myself and my family, but now it's about getting job done."

Ortiz on joining team and his losing weight since last year: "I have to talk to Brandon Hyde and see what they have planned for me. Last year when here, I was 270 (lbs.) and this year I'm down to 245. That has helped my body loosen up and get into positions I could not be last year. I've really been on top of my weight and staying in shape. I can drive through the mound better toward the catcher without my big belly."

Wynns on joining team, overcoming his spring oblique injury and starting today: "It was tough, a bump in the road. Obliques are a weird injury. Trust me, I was annoyed (at how long it took). No issues anymore.

"We have to execute our pitches today and be smart and attack them. Try to keep them off-balance. We've got to pitch, play some defense and try to win this game."

Game updates:

Yep, another homer: We didn't have to wait long to find out if the Twins would hit another homer today. Max Kepler's leadoff homer in the first on the first pitch from Dylan Bundy provided Minnesota the early 1-0 lead. It's his second career leadoff home run.

That is the 22nd homer allowed by the O's to Twins batters in 2019. It ties the most for a single season by Minnesota against Baltimore, first set in 1962 and equaled in 1964.

Extending the lead: A solo homer by Byron Buxton and two-run bloop single to center in the third by Marwin Gonzalez makes it a 4-0 lead for Minnesota. The Twins are looking for their 12th straight win over the Orioles.
