The American League East is winning in a head-to-head battle with the National League East. The two divisions are the best in each league so far, and each features four teams currently at .500 or better. The AL East actually has five with Boston's win last night.
AL East clubs have a record of 31-20 against the NL East and have won 12 of 17 series between the divisions.
Here are the AL East records against the NL East:
* Yankees are 9-0
* Orioles are 6-3
* Blue Jays are 6-6
* Rays are 6-6
* Red Sox are 4-5
Even if you take away New York's 9-0 mark, the other four AL East teams are 22-20 and have won nine of 14 series.
The East versus East matchups continue tonight with the Orioles in New York against the Mets and the Yankees hosting Atlanta. Beginning Tuesday, the Tampa Bay is at Washington and Miami is at Boston.
These last two series for the Orioles were quite different, especially on the scoreboard. There were a lot more crooked numbers put up in the Pirates series than the one with the Braves. The teams combined to score 40 runs in those three games at Camden Yards, but just 13 total by both teams in the three games at Turner Field.
Take a look at these offensive numbers:
* Orioles vs. Pittsburgh: 27 runs, .396 average, 12 doubles, 7 homers.
* Orioles vs. Atlanta: 9 runs, .190 average, 4 doubles, 0 homers.
The Orioles pitched to an ERA of 4.33 in the series with the Pirates and that mark was 1.38 against Atlanta. The O's recorded back-to-back shutouts the past two games against the Braves and take a scoreless streak of 20 consecutive innings into the series with the Mets.
After giving up just one run on six innings Sunday, Triple-A Norfolk's Chris Tillman is now 3-2 with an ERA of 2.56 over his last five starts. In that time, over 31 2/3 innings, Tillman has allowed just 17 hits with eight walks and 34 strikeouts. His ERA is 3.13 over his past 10 Norfolk starts.
Double-A Bowie's Zach Clark has been named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Sunday. Clark is the first Baysox pitcher to win the award since Mike Ballard won it for the week ending July 18, 2011.
Clark went 1-0 on the week with a 0.00 ERA over seven innings. The right-hander walked four and struck out seven as he shut out Portland on Wednesday and allowed just two hits in the win. On the season, Clark is 4-4 with a 3.01 ERA in 11 starts with the Baysox.
The Orioles today officially announced the signings of three more draft picks, bringing the total to 17: right-hander Nick Grim (round 17); right-hander Dennis Torres (round 28) and catcher Steele Russell (round 32).
