He became the 1,000th player in Orioles history when he made his debut with the club on Aug. 1. But now will he will be among the first to leave this offseason?
What to do with free agent outfielder Gerardo Parra?
The day before that debut, Parra was acquired from Milwaukee for Triple-A right-handed pitcher Zach Davies to help shore up the O's corner outfield. While Parra struggled at times with the Orioles, the 22-year-old Davies went 3-2 with a ERA of 3.71 in six starts with Milwaukee. He was named their Pitcher of the Month for September and could be in their starting rotation next April. Parra, meanwhile, is now a free agent.
At the time of his acquisition by the Orioles, Parra ranked among National League leaders in batting average (fourth, .328), slugging percentage (ninth, .517) and on-base plus slugging percentage (ninth, .886). Parra had a slash line of .328/.369/.517 and OPS of .886 with Milwaukee, but a line of only .237/.268/.357 and OPS of .625 with the Orioles.
Now the Orioles must decide if Parra is worth a multi-year contract for an O's team still looking for outfield help. MLBTradeRumors.com listed Parra as the No. 32 free agent in this class, projecting he would sign a three-year deal for $27 million with Washington.
At one point, some were projecting Parra for a Nick Markakis type of contract of four years and $40 million. But his numbers with the Orioles have seemed to depress that.
In 2013 and 2014, Parra hit .268 and .261. His OBP was .323 and .308. His OPS was .726 and .677. Are those the numbers we can expect from Parra going forward? Was his excellent start to the 2015 season with Milwaukee the outlier here?
Is Parra an answer for the Orioles at a corner outfield spot?
