Injury updates on O'Day, Hays and Cashner

Orioles reliever Darren O'Day underwent his hamstring surgery today in Baltimore and manager Buck Showalter said the procedure "went great."

"There were no surprises," Showalter said, adding that he's looking forward to O'Day "returning to form."

Head athletic trainer Brian Ebel spoke with O'Day earlier today.

Showalter remains confident that Andrew Cashner will make his next start following the All-Star break after receiving an injection yesterday in his neck. Cashner is on the disabled list with a strained muscle.

"I'm not sure yet what day that is," Showalter said. "Waiting to see a couple things."

Cashner could throw at Camden Yards before Monday and doesn't necessarily have to be pushed to the back of the rotation upon his return.

"He had an injection, I think, last All-Star break, really responds well to it," Showalter said. "Something we knew was going to have to happen at some point."

Showalter met with pitching coach Roger McDowell and bullpen coach Alan Mills to discuss how the rotation will unfold after the break. Showalter could confirm it for the media over the weekend.

I wrote earlier that Yefry Ramírez will start Saturday against the Rangers, a game that airs on FOX beginning at 7:15 p.m. Ramírez had his work day this afternoon.

A starter hasn't been named for Sunday, but Jimmy Yacabonis appears to be the favorite. The Orioles would have to recall him from Triple-A Norfolk.

Chris Tillman remains scheduled to start for the Tides on Sunday.

Chris Davis is the designated hitter tonight to provide some rest, a plan that was implemented before he arrived at the ballpark. Trey Mancini is playing first base.

"Chris and I talked a little bit and felt it was a good way to go today in advance. We knew we were going to do that coming in," Showalter said. "Wanted to get some people in there."
