It was a night the Orioles could enjoy in New York.
Jake Arrieta pitched the Orioles past the Yankees tonight 5-0 as the Orioles take the series two wins to one after losing the opener Monday and they also hand Ivan Nova his first loss since last June 3.
Matt Wieters and Nick Markakis hit solo homers to back Arrieta as the Orioles improved to 16-9 on the year to go seven games over the .500 mark for the first time since July 19, 2005 when they were 50-43.
The Orioles held the Yankees to three total runs in the series and this is the first time in 34 years that the Orioles held the Yankees to two runs or less in three straight games in New York.
They last did that from May 31-Aug. 4, 1978.
In this series, the Yankees scored just three runs on 17 hits with a team batting average of just .183 and only three extra-base hits. New York entered the series averaging 5.6 runs per game. This was the Orioles first shutout in New York since August 14, 2007.
In going 8-2 over the last 10 games, the Orioles have given up just 16 total runs.
Arrieta went eight innings, giving up just five hits, all singles. He did not walk a batter and tied his career high by fanning nine Yankees in the win, throwing 111 pitches. He is now 2-2 with a 3.52 ERA.
Over the last 10 games, O's starters have nine quality starts and an ERA of 1.65.
After beginning the year with an ERA of 2.66 over his first three starts, Arrieta had given up nine runs over 10 innings in his past two starts, but he turned that around tonight in the Bronx.
Nova, who entered with a record of 15-0 and ERA of 3.61 over his past 20 starts, lost for the first time since a defeat against the Angels in that game last June 3. The Yankees were 17-3 in those 20 starts.
Nova gave up nine hits and five runs (all earned) over 6 1/3 as he falls to 3-1 on the year with an ERA of 5.58 in five starts.
Wieters' solo shot to right in the fourth gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead and was his seventh homer of the year. It came on a 2-0 pitch from Nova. An RBI infield single from Robert Andino made it 2-0 in the sixth.
The Orioles pulled away with a three-run seventh that knocked Nova out of the game. Markakis hit his first homer since the second game of the season - ending a 22-game longball drought - to make it 3-0. Wieters added an RBI double in the inning and it became 5-0 on a Nick Johnson RBI single.
The Orioles are now 13-1 when their starter produces a quality start and 14-2 when the starter pitches at least six innings.
