Jonathan Schoop on his MLB debut, Ryan Flaherty on his two-homer night

Jonathan Schoop singled in his first major league at-bat and homered in his third, helping the Orioles to a 9-5 win over Toronto tonight. Schoop became the second Oriole to homer in his major league debut. Larry Haney was the first on July 27, 1966 against Cleveland. It was some night for the 21-year-old infielder and O's 2011 minor league Player of the Year. "For me, that is the first one ever in my career, my major league debut. It's an experience I'll never forget," Schoop said. Schoop said he has two baseballs to add to his trophy case. Although, for a second he wasn't sure he'd get the ball from his first big league hit. "When I came in, Alexi (Casilla) told me they threw the ball outside. I said, 'No way, no way,' but they were joking," Schoop said. "Very exciting to take the first one out of the way and it takes pressure away from yourself. When I hit (the third inning single) and saw the ball go for a hit, I was happy." Before the game, Schoop thought he would have some nerves tonight and he did. "To be honest, the first two innings, I wasn't feeling relaxed," he said. "I was feeling like I need to go everywhere, but as the game went on I felt relaxed." He was asked if he felt he showed the Orioles something tonight in an audition of sorts should they have an opening at second base next year. "No, no, no. I didn't think about that," Schoop said. "I just play baseball and whatever they need, whatever position they need, I'll be there. I feel comfortable wherever they need and I'm just worried about me getting better." Across the clubhouse, Ryan Flaherty talked about his second career two-homer game and the Orioles breaking out as a team on offense. "Yeah, it was nice to do," he said. "Doesn't matter the circumstances. Good to see that feeling back of scoring runs and winning the game feels good. "You know, there is definitely some disappointment (after last night). Every guy was disappointed for sure, but we have to go out, we have four games left and play good baseball. Anytime you go out, there is pride whether it's spring training or the World Series." Flaherty said it was also fun to see Schoop do so well in his first game. "Anytime anyone is making their debut, and he got the line drive up the middle and that was exciting," Flaherty said. "And then he hit a big home run. Exciting to watch."
