Jones homers again in first (O's win 4-3)

Say this about Adam Jones: He doesn't milk the moment when it comes to hitting home runs.

Get it over with and get back out to center field.

jones-white-home-run-fist-bump-sidebar.jpgJones launched No. 21 tonight, a two-run shot that gave the Orioles a 2-0 lead over the Angels at Camden Yards. Eleven of those home runs have come in the first inning.

Yes, it's the most in the majors this season, two more than Toronto's Jose Bautista and the White Sox's Jose Abreu.

Jones' 11 homers in the first are the most by an Oriole since Brady Anderson hit 13 in 1996.

Tonight's homer brought added significance. Jones moved into a fourth-place tie with Cal Ripken Jr. for most Camden Yards home runs with 85. It took Ripken 674 games, compared to 490 by Jones.

Rafael Palmeiro ranks first in Camden Yards homers with 121, followed by Anderson with 91 and Melvin Mora with 89.

We have another Jones-Mora connection tonight. They're tied for ninth place on the Orioles all-time home run list with 158.

Ripken is first with 431, followed by Eddie Murray (343), Boog Powell (303), Brooks Robinson (268), Palmeiro (223), Anderson (209), Ken Singleton (182) and Frank Robinson (179).

Kevin Gausman has retired the first nine Angels, with Nick Markakis making a diving catch in right-center field to rob Chris Iannetta and end the third.

Update: An RBI double by David Lough and run-scoring single by Ryan Flaherty in the fourth increased the Orioles' lead to 4-0.

Lough is 5-for-10 in his last three starts, the first one coming on June 27.

Gausman has retired the first 12 batters he's faced. Manny Machado made a spectacular play to rob Albert Pujols and end the top of the fourth, backhanding the ball deep in foul territory and making the throw from roughly the second row of seats beside the visiting dugout.

Update II: The Angels scored three runs in the fifth after Gausman retired the first two batters and walked the bases loaded.

Gausman lost his perfect game by walking Howie Kendrick, and he lost the no-hitter and shutout on Iannetta's two-run single into center field. Kole Calhoun followed with an RBI single before Mike Trout struck out.

Gausman began the inning at 37 pitches. He's now thrown 76 in five innings.

Plate umpire Kerwin Danley's got his fingerprints all over Gausman. Talk about squeezing a pitcher. Gausman throught he struck out David Freese to end the inning, but the walk loaded the bases.

Update III: Gausman tied his career high with seven innings. He allowed three runs and three hits, with three walks and two strikeouts.

Darren O'Day replaced Gausman, who threw 96 pitches (56 strikes).

Update IV: Game over. Orioles defeat the Angels 4-3 to move 14 games above .500 for the first time since July 22, 2013.

Darren O'Day retired the side in order in the eighth - he's allowed one run in his last 17 appearances - and Zach Britton recorded his 21st save.

The Orioles improve to 21-16 in one-run games. Their last five games have been decided by one run.

Gausman goes seven for win, Jones homers as O's be...
