Jones homers and Orioles getting production from bottom of order (updated)

NEW YORK - The Orioles jumped on Yankees starter Ivan Nova for three runs in the first inning today, another fast start for a team that's lost five of seven games. The Orioles have scored six runs in the first inning and eight in the ninth. Nick Markakis and Delmon Young opened with singles and Chris Davis lifted a sacrifice fly. Adam Jones followed with a two-run homer, his first of the season, on a 92 mph fastball. Jones had been 7-for-35 against Nova. Young is 8-for-13 with two homers, one reason why he's in the lineup today at designated hitter. Nelson Cruz is in left field, with David Lough on the bench despite the Yankees having a right-hander on the mound. Young's stats are "part of it," Showalter said. "I don't want them to be too far removed. I need to get Steve (Pearce) out there for a start or two, too. That's the one that... And I don't want Delmon to get too far away from his at-bats. That's why I tried to get Steve an at-bat over in Detroit and keep Delmon involved. Just keep their juices flowing as players, because we're going to need them. We're going to need them." Young is batting second for the first time since the 2008 season. He began today batting .310/.331/.471 in 29 games in the second slot in the order. Wei-Yin Chen retired the first two Yankees before Jacoby Ellsbury singled and scored on Carlos Beltran's double. Cruz had trouble handling the ball in the left field corner. Steve Lombardozzi singled leading off the top of the second. He's batting seventh today, followed by Ryan Flaherty and Jonathan Schoop. Flaherty followed with a bunt single, making him 2-for-22. Nova picked off Lombardozzi, the Orioles' third mistake on the bases in two games, but Jonathan Schoop followed with an RBI double to increase the lead to 4-1. Schoop is now 4-for-22 this season, and the Orioles have their first RBI from an eighth or ninth hitter this season. That's two aggressive sends today by third base coach Bobby Dickerson. Asked earlier today how much the Orioles miss Manny Machado, Showalter replied, "That's a poor reflection on the people that are playing in his absence if you start talking about that, from my job description, so I don't get involved in that. "That's a pretty easy question. You ask how much, it's hard to quantify that. You're saying it's a given that if he were here, we'd be doing something different. It's not. We'll see. He'll get back here and we'll move on to some other challenge. That's part of it." Going back to Young, his single made Orioles DHs 8-for-20 during a seven-game hitting streak. "One of the biggest things is we've got some people there that allow us to get some guys off the field," Showalter said. "In a perfect world, every manager would like to use the DH to get some guys off the field every now and then. With Nellie being able to go to right and left, and Lough being able to play center field, that works. So, there's some versatility there that we're able to take advantage of. But are there, what, maybe two old school true DHs still play in the American League? You've got (David) Ortiz and who? (Billy) Butler. (Adam) Dunn and (Paul) Konerko are kind of back and forth, right? "I'm not sure why that is, that there aren't the DHs that there used to be. Chili Davis. (Paul) Moliter. Edgar Martinez turned into one. It seemed like everybody had one, but they don't do that anymore. I wonder why that is." Update: The bottom of the order is now 6-for-6. Funny how a storyline can change in one day. The Orioles scored three runs in the top of the fourth to chase Nova. Lombardozzi, Flaherty and Schoop strung together singles to load the bases and Nick Markakis lifted a sacrifice fly. Young followed with an RBI single, the last batter faced by Nova, and Chris Davis drove in a run with an infield hit. The Orioles already have 11 hits. Jones drew his third walk in eight games. He had 25 last season. Alfonso Soriano led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to cut the lead to 7-2.
