Live blog from Dylan Bundy's first start at Bowie (Baysox win 5-3)

BOWIE, Md. - This is your destination tonight for all the news and notes of Dylan Bundy's first Double-A start. I will keep this blog live during tonight's Bowie-Erie game, updating it often as Bundy pitches, coming up at 6:05 p.m. in his first Bowie start. Bundy is 7-3 with an ERA of 1.92 this year over 19 starts between Single-A Delmarva and Single-A Frederick. He began this season with 33 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run before that ended in his first Frederick start. Bundy tonight is facing an Erie team that is a Tigers' affiliate with a record of 53-66. The Seawolves are third in the 12-team league with a team average of .264, and they rank seventh in homers and eighth in runs scored. As a team, they have the fewest strikeouts in the league on offense. Final: Behind a solid start from Bundy, the Baysox held on for the 5-3 win. With the victory Bundy is 8-3 with a 2.01 ERA over his 20 starts between Delmarva, Frederick and his first start in Bowie. Leaves game in the sixth: In the top of the sixth, Bundy gave up an infield single but saw the runner out caught stealing. He then allowed a double to Daniel Fields and was removed after 5 1/3 and 96 pitches. Lefty Mike Belfiore came on and gave up a two-out RBI single to add a run to Bundy's final line. Bundy's final line tonight at Bowie: 5 1/3 IP, 5H, 3R, 2ER, 3BB, 3K. The sixth ended with Bowie up 5-3 to Bundy could get the win. He struggled with his fastball command as this game went on. Two walks in the fifth: Bundy really struggled with his command and/or got squeezed by the home plate ump according to some fan groans in the top of the fifth. He walked two batters during a 22-pitch inning, but stranded them at first and third in a scoreless frame. Bundy through five: 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 strikeouts. A messy fourth: Bundy gave up an unearned run in the fourth when Erie used a double, walk and error to pull within 3-2. There was a one-out double in the frame and two-out error on shortstop Jonathan School that let the run come home. Bundy needed 25 pitches to get through that inning. Erie on the board in the third: The Seawolves cut Bowie's lead to 2-1 scoring a run in the top of the third. Brandon Douglas led off with a double to left, went to third on a sac bunt and scored on a grounder to short. Bundy gave up two hits in the inning and threw 17 pitches for a total now of 39 through three. In the last of the second for the Baysox Brian Ward had an RBI single and Jai Miller made it 2-0 with a sac fly. A good second: Bundy recorded a 1-2-3 second vs. Erie on a strikeout, groundout and line out to first. He threw 14 pitches, 10 for strikes in that inning. He fanned No. 4 hitter Jordan Lennerton, who is third in the league in homers and RBIs on a nasty 1-2 curveball that was down and in. First baseman Rhyne Hughes made a nice catch for the final out on a hard-hit liner. In the first: Bundy's first inning was a good one as he got three quick outs on just eight pitches, throwing six strikes. He got leadoff hitter Jamie Johnson on a weak grounder to second. He got No. 2 hitter Niuman Romero, the league's third-leading hitter, on a shallow fly to center and then got Nick Castellanos on a fly out to center. His fastball was registered at 95 and 96 mph in the first on the stadium radar gun. Certainly the first four hitters will test Bundy: * James Johnson is leading off as the DH and batting .288. * Niuman Romero bats second at shortstop and is batting .317 with seven homers and 61 RBIs. He is third in the Eastern League in batting and first with 141 hits. * No. 3 hitter Nick Castellanos is batting .304 in 58 games since being called up from the Florida State League. He was the MVP of this year's Futures Game. * No. 4 batter Jordan Lennerton is third in the league in homers (20) and RBIs (75). Check back often tonight and I'll post the latest, freshest information at the top each time.
