Luke Scott: "This is why we play the game."

The Orioles entered today with a record of 0-19 this year when trailing after seven innings. After scoring just one run over seven today vs. Felix Hernandez, and behind 5-1, the O's came to bat in the 8th this afternoon vs. Seattle righty Brandon League. League got a save here Tuesday and had not allowed an earned run over his last six games. But Luke Scott came up with the bases loaded and one out with the O's now down 5-2 after a Corey Patterson homer. His drive on the first pitch cleared the fence in left center and deflected off a fan's hands producing his second career Grand Slam, a 6-5 lead and eventual Orioles win. His approach to the at bat was simple. "Just get something to drive. With a guy like Brandon League, that throws a two-seamer, hard sinker and good split, you want to get him up in the zone. Look for something and drive. "It was actually a good pitch he made location wise. It was up in the zone but maybe touching the outside corner. It wasn't a bad pitch, I put a good swing on it, so." So he came up with his second career Slam and his third homer in four games and 6th on the year. "Man, it's a tremendous feeling," Scott said. "What we've been going through as a team and as a group, it's been really hard for us. Moments like this, this is why we play the game. To have success and win games and to enjoy this game. It can be fun and difficult. "I enjoy this game. I enjoy winning and doing well. God has given me the talent to play and a passion to do well. You see the start I've had. It's been very difficult. When these moments come, I take time to appreciate them and savor them." Scott said he was not surprised that Seattle didn't argue the call that perhaps there had been fan interference on the play as left fielder Michael Saunders reached into the stands but could not come up with the ball. "When I saw the replay it was pretty obvious that the ball cleared the fence. I was pumped up and really enjoyed it. What a game." It didn't hurt the O's cause when Hernandez left the game after 105 pitches. "He did a great job, stuff-wise, one of the best pitchers in the game. He moved the ball around with late life, late sink. He got a lot of ground ball outs. When we got a chance to get him out, we were able to take advantage of it." Scott's other Slam was on May 29, 2009 off Detroit's Dontrelle Willis. It was the O's first Slam of this season. The Orioles won just their second series of the year and are now 9-4 when scoring four runs or more.
