Machado denied monthly honor (O's lose 2-0)

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado had his 12-game hitting streak halted last night, and he learned today that he wasn't named the American League's Player of the Month for June.

The honor went to Angels first baseman Albert Pujols, who batted .303 (30-for-99) with four doubles, 13 home runs, 26 RBIs and 23 runs scored in 27 games.

Machado led the league with 42 hits and finished second with a .365 average in 28 games. He ranked fourth with 22 RBIs, tied for fifth with a .411 on-base percentage and fifth with a .635 slugging percentage.

Machado will have to settle for being named AL Player of the Week for the period ending June 14 after he batted .458 (11-for-24) with two home runs, five RBIs and nine runs scored.

During his hitting streak, Machado batted .412 (21-for-51) with six doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs.

Wei-Yin Chen made his 101st start last night for the Orioles, the most for a pitcher in franchise history without a complete game, according to Elias. Mananger Buck Showalter removed him last night after eight innings and 87 pitches.

The only other active pitchers with 100 or more starts and no complete games are Bud Norris (166), Travis Wood (131), Wade Miley (117) and Jose Quintana (103).

Speaking of Norris, his next turn comes Sunday in Chicago, but the Orioles are considering Miguel Gonzalez, who would be working on normal rest.

The Orioles continue to lead the majors with a .313 average with runners in scoring position. The Rockies are second at .302.

Now that Delmon Young is gone, Adam Jones leads the Orioles with five outfield assists. Young had eight assists before being designated for assignment yesterday.

Showalter will manage his 2,500th career game in the majors on Sunday in Chicago.

Update: Kevin Gausman shut out the Rangers on four hits over 6 1/3 innings, with two walks and seven strikeouts. He threw 95 pitches, 63 for strikes.

Darren O'Day stranded two inherited runners to keep the game scoreless.

Update II: Leonys Martin singled up the middle with one out in the ninth to score Shin-Soo Choo and break the scoreless tie. Choo drew a leadoff walk off Chaz Roe and took second on a sacrifice bunt.

Update III: Rougned Odor singled with two outs to increase the lead to 2-0. Tommy Hunter replaced Roe.

Update IV: The Orioles lose to the Rangers 2-0 and drop three of four games in the series.

The Orioles (42-37) are shut out for the fifth time this season.
