Machado leaves game, Britton and Guilmet providing great relief (O's lose 8-7)

Manny Machado has come out of tonight's game after 11 innings. Ryan Flaherty has moved to third base and Jonathan Schoop is playing second. Machado struck out on the ninth pitch from Indians reliever Josh Outman leading off the bottom of the 11th. No explanation given for his removal, but he did foul a ball off his left foot earlier tonight. Maybe that's it. Schoop was on deck to pinch-hit for Flaherty in the eighth, but J.J. Hardy reached on an infield hit and Flaherty stayed in the game. Zach Britton and Preston Guilmet have worked two innings tonight and made certain that the remaining fans at Camden Yards will get lots of free baseball. Britton threw 27 pitches over the ninth and 10th innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. He's permitted only two earned runs and 14 hits in 25 2/3 innings. No save situation tonight for Britton. Guilmet, recalled earlier today, has retired all six Indians that he's faced and all 11 batters he's faced in two stints with the Orioles. He's struck out four, including Nick Swisher tonight. The Indians traded Guilmet to the Orioles in April for minor league outfielder Torsten Boss. He has a chance to record his first major league win against his former team. Oh, sweet irony. Jones singled off Outman with one out in the 11th - his third hit of the night - but Chris Davis grounded into a 3-5-3 double play. Yes, the shift was on again. Update: Machado left tonight's game with right groin stiffness. No other details. Guilmet retired Asdrubal Cabrera to open the 13th and Troy Patton replaced him. That's seven up, seven down for Guilmet tonight. Guilmet threw 13 pitches last night and 25 tonight. If the Orioles need a fresh arm on Friday, is he in danger of being optioned again? Update II: Carlos Santana grounded a two-out, two-strike, two-run double to left field off Patton in the top of the 13th inning, and the Indians held on for an 8-7 win over the Orioles before 18,894 at Camden Yards. Patton allowed two straight hits and issued a walk to load the bases. Yan Gomes flied to right for the second out, but Santana grounded a ball just inside the bag and past Flaherty. Nick Markakis lined his third home run of the season into the right field seats off Scott Atchison with one out in the bottom of the 13th. The Orioles are 4-1 in extra innings this season.
