Machado turns from student to teacher (Beltre homers twice, O's down 5-2)

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has 122 hits this season, tying him with Baltimore native Al Kaline (1955) for the most hits before the All-Star break by a player under 22 years old, according to STATS. Machado's 47 extra-base hits through July 5 already were the most in major league history before the break by a player under 21. Machado may be facing his biggest challenge with manager Buck Showalter. "He's trying to get me to learn how to download some stuff, apps," Showalter told reporters earlier today. "He looked at my phone and said, 'You don't have any apps.' I said, 'What's an app?' And he said, 'It's an application.' Something about some music place you can go to. I said, 'Manny, when do I have time to listen to music?' "What's it called?" iTunes? "No." Pandora? "What did you say? Pandora!" Showalter said, his eyes lighting up. "He goes, 'Just go to Pandora.' And I went, 'I know about Pandora's box.' He got quite a kick out of it. He's still laughing at it. 'Buck, where's your apps?' I go, 'I don't know. Where are they?' "He's trying to get me with the times." It may be easier going 4-for-5 tonight. Zach Britton had a fairly easy time with the Rangers in the top of the first inning, inducing two fly balls and a grounder while retiring the side in order on 17 pitches (10 strikes). Leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler worked him for eight of those pitches. Six of Adam Jones' last eight home runs have come against Mariano Rivera, Justin Verlander, Jered Weaver, Matt Moore, Max Scherzer and R.A. Dickey. His 16 home runs this season have come against pitchers with a total of 26 All-Star Games (including 2013), two Cy Young Awards, a Most Valuable Player award and a Rookie of the Year award. And that doesn't include Moore, who's 12-3. Update: Adrian Beltre homered on Britton's first pitch of the second inning to give Texas a 1-0 lead. His 19th homer of the season came on a 90 mph fastball. The Orioles have surrendered 118 home runs, most in the majors. Houston is second with 114. The Orioles also have hit the most home runs with 121. Update II: Brian Roberts' fifth RBI of the season tied the game 1-1 in the second inning, and Machado's seventh home run and 123rd hit gave the Orioles a 2-1 lead in the third. Matt Wieters singled with two outs and Nate McLouth reached on an infield hit to bring Roberts to the plate. He was 1-for-18 before his RBI single. Machado found the left field seats with one out in the third. Perhaps Showalter will get an Instagram app and send along a photo. The Orioles have turned double plays in the second and third innings to bail out Britton. Update III: Britton had allowed six hits and walked three batters in 4 2/3 innings, but he still held a 2-1 lead. It didn't last, however. Nelson Cruz singled to tie the score and Beltre followed with a three-run shot - the 25th multi-homer game of his career. Britton has thrown 91 pitches in five innings and Kevin Gausman is warming in the bullpen.
