Since the conclusion of the 2013 season, third baseman Manny Machado won a Rawlings Gold Glove and a Fielding Bible Award, and last night was named the Orioles' 2013 Wilson Defensive Player of the Year.
Now comes another honor.
Machado received the Rawlings Platinum Glove tonight as the best defensive player in the American League, the announcement coming at the annual Gold Glove Awards dinner in New York City.
The Platinum Glove was been handed out for the past three seasons. Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre won the first two in the AL, and Cardinals catcher Yodier Molina won the first two in the National League.
Only recipients of a Gold Glove are eligible for the Platinum Glove, which eliminated Beltre from consideration in the fan voting.
Stop me if you've heard this before:
Last week, Machado became the first Orioles third baseman since Brooks Robinson in 1975 to win a Gold Glove. He also was the only Oriole to win a Fielding Bible Award.
Machado committed 13 errors in 484 chances this season. He registered an ultimate zone rating (UZR) of 31.2 and had 35 defensive runs saved (DRS). He also led all AL third basemen in fielding percentage (.973), assists (355), double plays turned (42) and range factor per game (3.02), and finished second in putouts (116).
Machado's 32 Total Zone Runs (the number of runs above or below average the player was worth based on the number of plays made) was the highest total for any defender in the majors in 2013 and tied for the 12th-best season of all-time. He also posted 4.4 Defensive Wins Above Replacement, pacing all AL defenders. It's tied for the eighth-highest single-season total of all-time for any position and tied for third in club history.
Atlanta's Andrelton Simmons won the Platinum Glove in the NL.
Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia beat out Machado last night for Wilson's Defensive Player of the Year in the AL.
Update: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy finished third in the AL with 12.8 percent of the votes, trailing Machado (27.6) and Pedroia (17.6).
