Manny Machado joins Brooks Robinson in Orioles history

According to the Orioles, only two players in club history at the age of 20 have collected four hits in a single game. Brooks Robinson was the youngest at 20 years, 130 days on Sept. 25, 1957. Manny Machado because the second-youngest yesterday in Oakland at 20 years, 296 days. Machado was 4-for-5. Robinson was 4-for-4. Robinson's four-hit day included a triple and his 10th RBI and raised his average to .226. All four hits came against Whitey Ford in the second game of a doubleheader. The Orioles improved to 73-76 under Paul Richards. The Yankees were 96-55 under Casey Stengel. I was not on the beat that year, in case you were wondering. Machado and Nate McLouth became the first Orioles to each have four hits in the same game since Matt Wieters and Mark Reynolds on June 14, 2012. In the first four games of this West Coast trip, McLouth, Machado, Nick Markakis, Adam Jones and Chris Davis are a combined 33-for-82 (.402) with five homers, 22 RBIs and 21 runs scored. McLouth has reached base safely in 22 of his last 36 plate appearances. Over his last nine games, McLouth is batting .517 (15-for-29) with seven walks and 13 runs scored. In the leadoff spot, McLouth is batting .368 (25-68) with 12 walks. Davis is 14-for-39 in his last 11 games, with five multi-hit games, four doubles, three homers and nine RBIs. Davis has 16 homers in his last 32 games and is batting .351/.432/.856 with 41 RBIs over that stretch. The Orioles went 8-1 against the Mariners in 2012. They've won eight straight against Seattle dating back to July 3, 2012 and have won five straight at Safeco Field dating back to July 3, 2012. They've won six of the last seven there, dating back to June 1, 2011. Over the last 11 games since April 18, the Orioles are batting a major league-best .370 (37-for-100) with runners in scoring position to raise their season average from .224 to .295. The Mariners activated Michael Saunders from the disabled list today and optioned Carlos Peguero to Triple-A Tacoma. Saunders is batting leadoff tonight. The Angels will start Joe Blanton, Jason Vargas, Tommy Hanson and Garrett Richards in the four-game series against the Orioles that begins Thursday night in Anaheim. Chris Tillman (Thursday), Miguel Gonzalez (Friday) and Jason Hammel (Sunday) are confirmed starters for the Orioles. They list Saturday's starter as TBA.
