Markakis ties Palmeiro and scores game's first run (updated)

BOSTON - The Red Sox held a moment of silence before the game for former Orioles public relations director Monica Pence Barlow. Her photo appeared on the video board in center field. monica.pngWell done. The temperature at first pitch was 39 degrees - same as Wednesday's game at Camden Yards. Nick Markakis doubled on the first offering from John Lackey, bringing the quickest challenge of the season. Boston manager John Farrell thought the ball hit outside the left field line, but the call stood. The delay lasted 2 minutes and 58 seconds. It brought the fourth unsuccessful challenge against the Orioles. Markakis moved to third on Chris Davis' ground ball and scored with two outs on Adam Jones' infield hit to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead. Jones' last three hits haven't reached the outfield. He had a bunt single and swinging bunt single on Wednesday. The Orioles are 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts. Davis and David Lough are tied for the team lead with two each, and Markakis and Steve Lombardozzi have one apiece. Markakis has tied Rafael Palmeiro for ninth place on the Orioles' all-time extra-base hits list with 434. He also improved to 20-for-58 (.345) lifetime versus Lackey. Chris Tillman walked Dustin Pedroia with two outs in the first before striking out Mike Napoli on his 20th pitch of the inning. Pedroia is a career .327 hitter against the Orioles. Update: The Orioles' lead grew to 4-0 in the third inning on Markakis' RBI double and Nelson Cruz's two-run single. Markakis broke the tie with Palmeiro for ninth place on the club's all-time extra-base hits list. He's now batting .356 against Lackey. Jones reached on another infield hit to load the bases for Cruz. That's four in a row for Jones. What's the club record for consecutive infield hits by one player? Wieters was thrown out trying to steal in the second as Lombardozzi struck out, making the Orioles 6-for-7 on stolen base attempts. The Red Sox loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second, but Tillman escaped the jam.
