Nick Markakis led off the bottom of the first inning tonight with the 1,452nd hit of his career, tying Brian Roberts for seventh place on the Orioles' all-time list. He's three behind Ken Singleton for sixth place.
Markakis is batting .413 (26-for-63) in the first inning this season.
Markakis had an easy trip around the bases. Delmon Young followed with his second home run of the season to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead.
Young's first homer came on April 8 in the Bronx.
Young is 18-for-46 (.391) with four homers and eight RBIs lifetime off Toronto starter Mark Buehrle, who got burned tonight with his changeup.
Bet you wondered why manager Buck Showalter sat Steve Pearce tonight and gave Young the start as the designated hitter. Pearce is 2-for-5 against Buehrle, but, you know, smaller sample size.
Kevin Gausman threw 21 pitches in the first inning, allowing an infield hit to Jose Reyes and getting an unusual double play.
Reyes tried to go from first to third on Melky Cabrera's grounder to third baseman Manny Machado, but Chris Davis fired across the diamond and got him. Reyes noticed that nobody was covering the bag, but Machado backpeddled and made the tag.
Machado also stepped on Reyes' hand and immediately offered an apology. Nothing to see here, folks.
Gausman struck out Jose Bautista on a 98 mph fastball to end the inning. His heater routinely was clocked at 97 before that final pitch.
Gausman retired the first two Blue Jays in the second before walking Brett Lawrie. He's thrown 32 pitches in two innings.
Machado ended an 0-for-18 skid with a leadoff double in the bottom of the second inning.
Update I: Caleb Joseph singled to score Machado and increase the lead to 3-0. Joseph has four RBIs this season.
Kevin Gausman was hit on the backside near the right hip by an Anthony Gose liner in the third. He stayed in the game and stranded two runners.
Gausman has thrown 53 pitches in three innings. The Orioles have allowed one run in the last 30 innings.
Update II: The Orioles hadn't allowed a run in 19 consecutive innings until Melky Cabrera singled to center field with two outs in the fifth to reduce the Orioles' lead to 3-1. It's the second run off the Orioles in 32 innings.
Juan Francisco led off with a double for the first extra-base hit off the Orioles in 23 innings.
Gausman has thrown 89 pitches in five innings. He's allowed one run and four hits, walked three and struck out two.
