Matt Wieters: "It's time to make a run"

Orioles catcher Matt Wieters left Wednesday's game in Texas early, not because it was a blowout, but because he took a foul ball off his right shoulder and he felt some discomfort. But, he says he is fine and ready to play tonight. "Nothing more than a bruise in a bad spot," Wieters said. "If it had been anyplace other than that shoulder I would have been able to keep playing. Just as the game went on it got a lit bit tighter. But I got ice on it after the game. It felt good yesterday and even better today." The Orioles begin play today at 67-57 and are tied for the AL's second wild card playoff berth with Oakland and Detroit. "It's getting to the point in the year where it's time to make a run," Wieters said. "Any team that is in it right now can make a big run and try and put some distance and try and get that much closer to the playoffs. It'd be nice to make a big run right now, but at the same time you have to worry about tonight and try to get one at a time." The Orioles were not exactly putting up big numbers in attendance on the last homestand and Wieters was asked about getting more fans at the games. "We'd love to see them here. We're playing as hard as we can and they can help carry us through and helps us get a few more wins. Make it that much easier to reach that playoff goal," he said. A reporter reminded Wieters that the Orioles have mailed playoff ticket invoices to their season-ticket holders. "There have been a lot of firsts this year compared to my first three years here. It's nice to have that opportunity but there is still a lot of stuff we need to work on to get better to get there," he said.
