Matt Wieters talks about going on the disabled list (plus Tillman and Davis quotes)

Orioles catcher Matt Wieters met with reporters after the game to discuss the decision that led to him going on the disabled list today with a right elbow strain. "Ultimately it was what is going to get me back catching as quick as possible," he said. "Letting it completely rest, as opposed to trying to go get half ready every day, it may have been slowing us down a little bit. Now let it completely rest and hopefully get back catching even sooner." Wieters did confirm that nothing new was found with his elbow since his exam with Dr. James Andrews in Florida. "No. It just turned into more...you know are we kind of starting again at ground zero everyday we come back if I keep swinging everyday," Wieters said. "I want to make sure that we can make progress and continue to improve on it. "Didn't really know what to expect with it. First time I really experienced anything with it. So kind of going with how the symptoms feel and definitely something we want to make sure to get right." Is he concerned this could turn into a bigger issue? "Nobody knows exactly what is going to happen tomorrow, so we're just going to come here every day ready to rehab and when I'm ready I'm ready," Wieters said. "We just know it's not right right now and we want to get it right before I get back out there. "The DL is tough. It's something to where you have to keep yourself mentally into the game and physically ready to go when you come back. Hopefully I can find a way to help these guys not being in the lineup every day." Does he think he can return when his DL time is up? "Hope so," he said. "Anything is possible, but we'll set the day when it gets closer to the time. The whole goal is to get back and get playing and we are just trying to find the quickest and best way to do that." Wieters said he will stop pregame hitting now as well. It's a full shut down for the immediate future for the Orioles catcher. As for today's game, Chris Tillman gave up three runs over five innings. Over his first three starts, Tillman had an ERA of 0.84. Over his last five starts, his ERA is 6.49 and he's gone 5 2/3 innings or fewer four of five times. He said you can discount one theory, that anything is physically bothering him. "I felt fine. Everyone goes through their bumps and grinds throughout the season. It's part of the game. Everyone does it," Tillman said. He gave up a three-run homer in the first inning and he now has an ERA of 7.88 in the first inning with eight walks in eight innings. He said he's not sure why that is. "I got nothing. Once I notice what is going on, I guess I need to notice it earlier. Find out what is going on and how to deal with it. "It was a struggle for me. Fastball command wasn't there for me from the get go. Nothing was really there for me early on and it was a battle all day. It's frustrating but have to hang with it. I'd like to get deep in that game to give my team a better chance to win. Frustrating." Chris Davis did return to the Orioles lineup, going 2-for-4 with a single and double. "Felt good," Davis said. "Timing is a little bit off, little bit in between. But it was good to get out there and move around and be in the lineup again. Take it one day at a time." As Davis returns, Wieters departs, for the DL. "That is probably the best, even though it's tough to digest right now, it's probably the best thing for him. We wish him all the best and know he's going to come back strong," Davis said.
