Matusz injured in bunting drill (updated)

Brian Matusz was hit on the nose by a ball while performing a bunting drill, and he may not make tomorrow's start against the Pirates. The Orioles' corresponding 25-man roster move to accommodate Brian Roberts could hinge on Matusz's status. Also, Nolan Reimold likely will go on the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster. He's having another MRI tomorrow. Update: OK, sorry for the short blog entry, but I was racing from the press conference to manager Buck Showalter's office to tape his pregame segment for WBAL Radio. I had to e-mail this entry from my phone to someone in the MASN web studio. Anyway, Matusz was bunting off a pitching machine and the ball deflected off his bat and smashed into the bridge of his nose. There was lots of bleeding, and he's being examined to determined whether he suffered a fracture. If the swelling is bad around his eyes, he probably won't make tomorrow's start and Showalter will be scrambling to find a replacement. Jake Arrieta is one option because he'd be working on regular rest. Reimold is flying into Baltimore to be examined by a spine specialist and undergo another MRI. He's not experiencing any pain, but he's still bothered by weakness in his shoulder and some tingling and numbness. The problem isn't going away. Reliever Matt Lindstrom (finger) is throwing off a flat mound in Sarasota. That's not the same as flat ground because it includes a pitching rubber, and it's not the same thing as a half-mound because it isn't elevated. But Lindstrom is progressing toward throwing sessions on the half and regular mounds, so that's encouraging. Nick Markakis had the stitches removed from his right wrist. He's in the clubhouse today, joking with Roberts about being gone for so long. As for the weather, the tarp is on the field and there's no batting practice as rain continues to fall. Shameless plug alert: I'm filling in for Rick Dempsey tonight on O's Xtra on MASN2. We'll have a pregame show, but the weather will dictate whether we also have a postgame show.
