Mesa remains unbeaten thanks to Souza's big hit

Mesa remained unbeaten with a 3-1 win over Peoria in Wednesday's Arizona Fall League play. A Steven Souza Jr. line drive to right field plated two runs in a three-run sixth inning and six pitchers held Peoria to just a single run. Souza, a taxi squad member playing right field, finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs, and is now batting .364. Brian Goodwin led off for the first time in the AFL this season and played center field, going 1-for-4 with a strikeout and his first stolen base. Catcher Adrian Nieto went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Another clutch hit by Souza? And he only gets to play in two games a week? He is quickly moving to the forefront of being the top hitting prospect, alongside Matt Skole, in the Nationals organization. Reliever Richie Mirowski recorded his second hold with one inning of work. He allowed no runs, no walks, no hits and struck out one. He has yet to allow a run in the first 10 days of the fall League. The Solar Sox improved to 6-0-1 and stretched their East division lead to 4 1/2 games. Tonight, Mesa hosts Peoria with left-hander Matt Purke (1-0, 0.00) starting his second game. First pitch is at 9:35 p.m. Eastern time.
