Miley vs. Cueto today in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO - Jonathan Schoop has played every inning and out of every game for the Orioles this season. He may be rested later this month or the next, but it's not happening this afternoon.

No way does Schoop sit against Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto.

Schoop has four hits in five career at-bats against Cueto, a small sample size. However, three of those hits are home runs.

The Orioles will need a leadoff hitter if Adam Jones wakes up with a swollen right hand. The guy is amazing. Takes a fastball off the knuckles while squaring to bunt, the pain so severe that he doubles over, but he stays in the game and playfully tried to shoo away the media at his locker.

Sensing that we were hovering, Jones said he was fine and continued to get dressed. He wondered if we needed anything else, I said we had a few other questions if he had the time, and a short interview was born.

I sneaked in a hand question in the middle of three queries and he repeated that he was fine and he'd play today. Nice of him to ask about my hand, knowing that this job is a hazard.

Manager Buck Showalter worries about his center field depth and said last night that it's "Adam or Adam." Nolan Reimold has played 10 games in center field in the majors, including eight starts, and he'd likely be the choice if Jones sat out. It seems obvious, though, that Showalter is more comfortable with Reimold at the corners.

Ryan Flaherty has played 26 games in right, 11 in left and none in center.

It would be impossible to rush a center fielder to the West Coast. My guess is Jones plays.

Cueto is 13-3 with a 2.93 ERA and four complete games in 23 starts, but as usual, we're digging a little deeper here. He's allowed nine runs and 13 hits in two August starts covering 12 2/3 innings. He's also surrendered four home runs.

Cueto had one quality start in his last five outings and two in his last eight. He was 13-1 with a 2.47 ERA and 0.997 WHIP in 18 first-half starts, and he was the National League's starting pitcher in the All-Star Game. But he's 0-2 with a 5.02 ERA and 1.430 WHIP in five starts in the second half.

Now, back to the surface stuff.

Cueto is 0-2 with a 10.32 ERA in two career starts against the Orioles, with 13 earned runs (14 total) and 19 hits in 11 1/3 innings.

Chris Davis is 4-for-7 with a double and two home runs, Mark Trumbo is 3-for-6 with a double, Jones and Manny Machado are 1-for-6 with a home run, Pedro Alvarez is 6-for-34 and J.J. Hardy is 3-for-18.

Left-hander Wade Miley makes his third start with the Orioles, the last Tuesday night in Oakland, when he allowed two runs in six innings in a 2-1 loss.

Miley is 4-4 with a 3.23 ERA in 10 career games (nine starts) versus the Giants and 1-3 with a 3.52 ERA in six starts at AT&T Park.

Buster Posey is 9-for-25 with three doubles and a home run against Miley. Angel Pagan is 5-for-15 with a triple, Brandon Belt is 4-for-7 with a triple and home run, Joe Panik is 3-for-5, Hunter Pence is 3-for-22 with eight strikeouts and Brandon Crawford is 2-for-14 with a double.
