Minor league notes on Cooney, Simon, Mummey and Hoes

Right-handed reliever Brandon Cooney of the Double-A Bowie Baysox went on the disabled list Monday due to shoulder soreness. Cooney was 1-1 with one save and an ERA of 2.70. Over 10 innings, he allowed just five hits with seven walks and 10 strikeouts. The Orioles don't believe the injury is too serious and he should not be out long. Billy Rowell came off the disabled list Monday and is batting .231 with no homers and four RBIs over 13 games with Bowie. Trent Mummey, an outfielder for Single-A Frederick, remains on the disabled list after suffering a concussion May 4 when his head hit the outfield wall at Harry Grove Stadium. Drafted last year in the fourth round out of Auburn, Mummey was off to a real good start and was batting .280 with two homers, 18 RBIs, an .828 OPS and 16 steals in 24 games between Single-A Delmarva and Frederick. He will likely be evaluated again in 10-14 days to see how is doing then and when he can return. LJ Hoes of Frederick continues to improve his batting average. He was batting just .140 on April 23, but is now hitting .252 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 29 games. Hoes continues to make starts on defense in left field and at second base. A former outfielder in high school, the Orioles feel he has a comfort level playing out there and maybe getting back there some helped his offense get going. Alfredo Simon is scheduled to make his second start for the Bowie Baysox tomorrow when Bowie hosts Richmond in an 11:05 a.m. game. Simon will throw around 90 pitches in this outing after giving up six hits and three earned runs over five innings for Bowie last Thursday. He threw 81 pitches in that outing against Harrisburg.
