MLB Network's Harold Reynolds talks Orioles at the Winter Meetings

SAN DIEGO - With the Orioles looking to add at least one outfielder, MLB Network's Harold Reynolds believes that pursuing Atlanta's Justin Upton via a trade is the best move for the club right now. "If they make a trade, of all the names that have been mentioned, I think Justin Upton is the best move for them," Reynolds said. "He's 26, 27. If you can lock him up and keep him long-term, you are looking at a player you can have another eight or nine years. He's going to hit 30 home runs in that ballpark each year. He'd be the best fit for me." Reynolds, who was an Oriole in 1993, took part in a video interview with MASNSports.com here at the Manchester Grand Hyatt after his Hot Stove morning show. The video will be posted here later. Over the last 24 hours, MLB Network has spent a lot of time talking about Dan Duquette and Toronto's reported interest in the Orioles executive vice president. "The first thing that stood out to me is it's within the division," Reynolds said. "He and Buck Showalter have done a great job of revitalizing the Orioles, making them competitive again and making the place a destination to go watch games again. I'd hate to see it happen, but on the other side if Dan has an interest in going, I can understand that." Reynolds does not feel this will serve as a distraction for Duquette or the O's front office as they conduct business here. "No, I think he's professional enough and has enough good relationships to really get things done," Reynolds said. In the American League East, the Orioles are always up against big-spending teams in Boston and New York and I asked Reynolds about his take on that. "It is going to be a battle, but anytime you are up against the Yankees and Red Sox with their money and resources and ability to snap their fingers and change the direction of the organization, it changes that whole division," he said. "We saw it with Boston going out and out signing a pair of $100 million dollar players. How many teams can do that?" Reynolds will take part in an event here tomorrow with Orioles center fielder Adam Jones. Major League Baseball will host a series of youth baseball- and softball-focused events at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Tuesday. The day will be highlighted with a hitting exhibition, presented by Reynolds and Jones, a San Diego native. "We are expecting about 3,000 kids tomorrow. Adam being from San Diego, I made a quick phone call and immediately he said, 'Sure, my hometown, I'll be there,' " Reynolds said. "The main thing for me is to get kids interested in baseball. It is open to the public for free."
