More frustration for Guthrie and some post-game notes

If Jeremy Guthrie was frustrated after his start vs. New York last week, and he sure seemed to be, Monday night likely didn't ease his angst. He pitched six good innings, but was done in by one poor inning and one poor pitch in a 4-1 loss to the Yankees. Randy Winn, who hit just two homers last year, drilled a Guthrie 1-0 pitch for a three-run homer to right to snap a 1-1 tie during New York's four-run fourth. It can't make Guthrie feel any better to know Winn had gone 490 at bats without a homer, the third longest current stretch in the Majors. Winn's last homer was April 25, 2009 for San Francisco at Arizona. Guthrie controlled the big guns in the New York lineup, but got beat by the number nine hitter. That and the fact the O's didn't score much for him again. They have scored just 14 runs in his six starts and only nine of those runs while he has been in the game. Will he ever have an outing when every pitch doesn't seem critical? On the plus side, the O's are 5-5 in a 12-game stretch vs. Boston and New York and Brian Matusz is on the mound tonight. Here are more stats and notes from Monday's game: CC Sabathia gave up just one run over eight innings, improving to 6-0, 1.77 in his last six starts vs. the Orioles. He is 11-1, 2.52 in 16 career starts vs. the O's and is 7-0, 1.55 in his last nine Yankee Stadium starts. He has more wins vs. the O's than any other AL East opponent. Opposing starters have worked at least seven innings vs. the O's in 15 of 26 games in 2010. The Orioles, who are 3-1 on Sundays, are now 0-3 on Mondays. Nick, Garrett & Matt: Nick Markakis went 1 for 3 with a double. He is batting .422 (19 for 45) with six doubles over his last 11 games. Garrett Atkins snapped an 8 for 47 stretch going 2 for 3 vs. Sabathia. He is now 7 for 11 in his career vs. the southpaw. Matt Wieters hit a solo homer to right in the second inning, his third homer of the year. It was his second homer in three games. Adam Jones went hitless after going 7 for 14 in the Boston series. The O's went 6 for 31 as a team after batting .301 and scoring 20 runs in the Boston series. O's pitching has allowed at least one homer in seven consecutive games, giving up 14 total in that time. The Orioles are now 3-11 in road games, 6-13 vs. the AL East, 1-16 when scoring fewer than four runs and 1-7 vs. left handers. They are now 2-7 in the first game of a series and 2-12 in their last 14 games on the road vs. New York. Tuesday at 7:05 at New York, Brian Matusz (2-1, 4.40) faces A.J. Burnett (3-0, 2.43). Last Thursday at Camden Yards, Burnett topped Matusz and the Orioles, 4-0. He gave up just three hits over eight innings while Matusz allowed three runs over six frames. In two career starts vs. NY, Matusz is 1-1, 2.77. He got the win at Yankee Stadium last September 12, allowing just four hits and one run over seven innings. Matusz has recorded three straight quality starts. Burnett, who is 3-0 for the first time in his career, has not allowed a homer over his last 30 1/3 innings since April 6th. He is 10-2, 4.76 in 14 career starts vs. the O's. Tuesday night, Burnett will be making his 250th career start.
