It never gets old. And neither does Manny Machado, who's still only 20. Machado has 99 hits this season. According to Elias, if he gets his 100th hit tonight, he will tie Alex Rodriguez (100 hits in 71 games in 1996) and Ty Cobb (100 hits in 71 games in 1907) for third-fewest games reaching 100 hits to start a season by a player under 21. Al Kaline (101 hits in 68 games in 1955) and Mike Trout (100 hits in 69 games in 2012) are the only players under 21 to reach 100 hits in a season faster than Rodriguez and Cobb. Machado has five consecutive multi-hit games, which is tied with five others for the longest streak in the American League this year (Machado has the only active streak). The only players with longer streaks this year are Marco Scutaro (seven straight from May 7-14), Everth Cabrera (six straight from June 3-8) and Starling Marte (six straight from April 6-12). Machado has hit in a career-high 14 straight games, the longest by an Oriole this year. He joins Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, Kyle Seager, Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera as the only players with two hitting streaks of 11 or more games this year (Cabrera has three). Machado is batting .328 (20-for-61) during the streak, with seven doubles, seven RBIs and eight runs scored. He had one hit in each of the first nine games of the streak before posting five straight multi-hit games. Machado has hit safely in 24 of his last 26 road games, batting .378 (45-for-119) with 15 doubles, three homers, 14 RBIs and 20 runs scored. He's hit in 16 of his last 17 road games, going 30-for-79 (.380) with nine doubles, two homers, 10 RBIs and 13 runs scored. Machado has the most hits on the road in the majors (55). He's posted at least three hits in eight road games this year, the most in the majors. Machado has 32 doubles in 70 games and is on pace for 74 on the year. The major league record for doubles in a season is 67 by Boston's Earl Webb in 1931. The Orioles record is 56 by Brian Roberts in 2009. I ran this one yesterday, but it's worth sharing again: Machado leads the majors with 32 doubles and Chris Davis leads with 23 homers. According to STATS, the only time in the modern era of baseball that teammates finished outright leaders in doubles and homers in the same season was 1927, when Lou Gehrig had 52 doubles and Babe Ruth hit 60 homers. In his last 36 games since May 9, Davis is batting .355 (50-for-141) with 12 doubles, 14 homers, 29 RBIs, nine walks and 28 runs scored. He's 36-for-97 (.371) over his last 24 games. According to STATS, Davis is one of three Orioles all-time to record at least 20 homers (23) and 20 doubles (22) before the All-Star break, joining Brady Anderson in 1996 (30 homers, 21 doubles) and B.J. Surhoff in 1999 (20 homers, 22 doubles). Down on the farm, Double-A Bowie catcher Caleb Joseph was named the Eastern League's Player of the Week after batting 522 (12-for-23) with three doubles, a home run, seven RBIs and two runs scored. In 60 games this season, Joseph is batting .305 with 18 doubles, 13 homers and 50 RBIs.
