More on Markakis (w/game updates)

Nick Markakis became the 19th outfielder since 1900 to record at least four seasons with 40 doubles in his career. Markakis is now tied for the third-longest streak of 40-double seasons. The other three players are in the Hall of Fame. Joe Medwick did it for seven straight years beginning in 1933. Harry Heilman's streak lasted five seasons beginning in 1923. Markakis is tied with Tris Speaker, whose streak of four consecutive seasons began in 1920. Yeah, it's been a while. Jay Moskowitz, the Orioles' coordinator of baseball information, passed along that gem. Tonight's attendance: 18,247. Update: Brian Matusz walked J.D. Drew leading off the seventh and came out of the game. Jim Johnson replaced him and gave up Jed Lowrie's hit, putting two on with no outs. The potential tying and go-ahead runs moved up on a sacrifice bunt, but Marco Scutaro bounced to third and pinch-hitter Daniel Nava struck out looking at a curveball to end a nine-pitch battle. Johnson was pumping 95 mph fastballs. Matusz is charged with two runs and six hits, with one walk and six strikeouts. He threw 98 pitches. Update II: Matusz posted a 2.43 ERA in six starts and 37 innings this month, with seven walks and 26 strikeouts. That includes five runs over four innings in an Aug. 14 game in St. Petersburg.
