Mullins returns to injured list (plus lineups and notes)

The Orioles needed length out of their bullpen today and recalled Logan Gillaspie from Triple-A Norfork. Cedric Mullins has gone on the 10-day injured list with a right adductor groin strain, a move that’s retroactive to Sunday.

Mullins hasn’t played since Saturday night, when the club announced that he felt tightness in his right quadriceps. He missed almost a month with a groin injury before returning on June 24.

The roster is back to 13 pitchers and 13 position players.

Gillaspie has appeared in 11 games with the Orioles and posted a 6.00 ERA and 2.111 WHIP in nine innings. He’s made 21 appearances with Norfolk and registered a 3.91 ERA and 1.478 WHIP in 23 innings.

Gillaspie’s last appearance was Sunday, when he tossed one inning.

Cole Irvin went four innings last night and Mike Baumann worked the last two. The bullpen was hurting.

Colton Cowser is on the bench today against left-hander Julio Urías. He’s 3-for-27 with seven walks in nine games and 0-for-11 in his last four.

Adley Rutschman also is counted among the reserves.

Austin Hays is leading off and playing left field. Ryan Mountcastle is playing first base, Aaron Hicks is in center, Jordan Westburg is the second baseman and Gunnar Henderson is the designated hitter.

Jorge Mateo gets a start at shortstop.

Dean Kremer faces his former organization today and tries to prevent the Orioles from being swept in a series for the first time since May 13-15, 2022.

The Orioles acquired Kremer and four other players for infielder Manny Machado at the 2018 trade deadline. He’s the only one involved in the transaction who remains with the team.

Kremer had allowed two earned runs this month in 13 innings, and he’s struck out 18 batters.

Anthony Santander, who collected his career-high 25th double last night, has increased his walk rate from 2.9 percent in June to 15 percent this month.

The Orioles have lost two straight but remain one game behind the first-place Rays.

Urías is 7-5 with a 4.35 ERA and 1.109 WHIP in 13 starts. He finished third in National League Cy Young voting last year after going 17-7 with a 2.16 ERA and 0.960 WHIP in 31 starts.

Urías has back-to-back quality starts, allowing two earned runs in 12 innings with 15 strikeouts. He blanked the Mets on one hit in six innings in his most recent outing.

The Orioles have faced Urías twice in his career, including one start. He’s allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Urías tossed a scoreless relief inning at Camden Yards in September 2019.
