Nats allow another home run (Nats come back and win 8-6)

The Phillies connected first, against right-hander Jefry Rodriguez, to take an early lead over the Nats.

Phillies pitcher Nick Pivetta singled to begin the third. One batter later, Rhys Hoskins slammed a two-run shot over the right-center field wall for his 11th homer of the season. Hoskins connected on a 94 mph four-seam fastball.

Rodriguez has employed his changeup more than he had in his last start, and his curveball has forced a lot of swings-and-misses.

The Nats have three hits, all singles, against Pivetta. Bryce Harper is 0-for-2 with two strikeouts. Pivetta pitched in the Nats' system from 2013 to 2015.

After three innings, the Phillies lead the Nats 2-0.

Update: The Nats tied the game in the fourth. Anthony Rendon hit his ninth homer of the season. Juan Soto, Daniel Murphy and Michael A. Taylor singled. Taylor's knock evened the score at 2-2.

A rain delay began at 9:25 p.m.

With no outs and Wilmer Difo up, the Nats and the Phillies are now tied at 2-2.

Update II: The game resumed at 10:03 p.m. The rain delay totalled 38 minutes. Pivetta struck out the side after the rain delay.

After four innings, the Nats and the Phillies are even at 2-2.

Update III: Rodriguez struggled to begin the fifth, allowing a walk to César Hernández and hitting Hoskins with a pitch. He was replaced by left-hander Sammy Solís. Solís allowed a two-run triple down the right field line by Odùbel Herrera. Nick Williams crushed a two-run homer.

Rodriguez finished four innings plus two batters, giving up four runs on five hits with three walks (one intentional), a hit-by-pitch and three strikeouts. He threw 96 pitches, 60 for strikes.

Mid-fifth, the Phillies lead the Nats, 6-2.

Update IV: The Nats created a solid scoring opportunity in the fifth. Bryce Harper doubled with one out. With two outs, Soto and Murphy were walked. But Taylor struck out on three straight fastballs.

Pivetta went five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. He threw 87 pitches, 60 for strikes.

After five, the Phillies lead 6-2.

Update V: The Nats followed through with a fired-up rally in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Adam Eaton started the two-out rally with a single. Trea Turner tripled, Harper doubled and Rendon doubled, each bringing in a run. Soto struck out on a fastball by Phillies reliever Austin Davis to end the frame.

After six innings, the Phillies lead 6-5 over the Nats.

Update VI: The Nats had a shot at tying the game in the seventh but came up short. Taylor singled with one out. Difo singled for runners on the corners. But Pedro Severino grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. The Nats challenged the call, arguing that the runner was safe at second base, but the call was upheld. The video review took one minute and 37 seconds.

After seven innings, the Phillies lead 6-5 over the Nats.

Update VII: In the eighth, facing the Phillies' Seranthony Dominguez and his 100 mph fastball, Murphy drilled a two-run single over Hernandez's head into right field and Taylor supplied a RBI single to lift the Nats to their first lead of the game, 8-6. They trailed 6-2 in the fifth.

Sean Doolittle kept the Phillies off the scoreboard in the ninth for his 21st save, aided by a pair of spectacular defensive plays on grounders that were gloved by Rendon and Difo.

The victory marks the Nats 12th come-from-behind win of the season. They are now 5-29 when trailing after seven innings.

Final score: the Nats 8, the Phillies 6.
