New York with six more homers in win over Orioles

The New York Yankees hit more homers at Camden Yards. They took an early lead. The Orioles came back. But the Orioles lost. It was a bit like last night with fewer runs. By the Orioles.

The Yankees beat the Orioles 9-4 at Oriole Park to take the first two games of this series. New York (74-39) has won 11 straight this season against the Orioles and 14 in a row at Camden Yards since July 11, 2018.

Tonight they hit six more homers to give them 11 in this series and 47 in 14 games versus O's pitching. They have a 12-2 record against the Orioles this season, and 38 homers in going 9-0 at Oriole Park, where they have scored 81 runs.

After the game started an hour and 12 minutes late due to rain, New York scored three in the third and the Orioles scored two. The Yankees hit three solo homers off right-hander Asher Wojciechowski. Mike Tauchman hit No. 10, DJ LeMahieu No. 18 and Didi Gregorius No. 8. An inning later Austin Romine's two-run double made it 5-2 and the Orioles never did get even in the game tonight after the third.

Anthony Santander's ninth homer, a two-run shot in the fifth, pulled the Orioles within 5-4. Santander went deep off former O's farmhand Stephen Tarpley, drilling a pitch 107 mph.

But New York scored in the sixth on Romine's solo homer, and in the eighth on Tauchman's RBI double.

Wojciechowski falls to 2-5 with a 4.89 ERA after allowing five runs in four innings. Over his last two starts he's yielded nine runs in 8 2/3. In the two that preceded that - against Boston and the Los Angeles Angels - he gave up four hits and two runs over 14 1/3. O's pitching has gone 10 straight games without a quality start.

Tauchman, who began tonight batting .429 since the All-Star break to lead the majors, has had quite the series in Baltimore. He's gone 5-for-8 with a double, three homers, four runs and five RBIs.

The Orioles called up outfielder DJ Stewart today and he got hurt again in this game. He was trying to make a sliding catch of Mike Ford's short fly to left in the fourth, and he fell and got hit in the head by the ball. He initially stayed in the game, but in the bottom of the inning Jace Peterson pinch-hit for him.

The Orioles (38-75) have lost four of six. They are 7-7 the last 14 games, 10-9 in 19 and 16-17 since June 38. They are now 17-40 at home.
