You know all about Jeremy Guthrie's run support issues, but here's a reminder:
Before today, the Orioles hadn't scored in Guthrie's last three starts while he was in the game, and in five of seven. He received the lowest run support of any American League starter at 1.70 per game.
In his seven previous starts, the Orioles scored six runs while he was in the game.
So what's happening today? The Orioles erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third to give him a 4-2 lead.
He must be blushing.
Nolan Reimold tied the game with a two-run homer. Adam Jones reached on a two-out bunt single and raced home on Nick Makakis' single and the ensuing error by Nationals left fielder Laynce Nix. Vladimir Guerrero followed with an RBI single that raised his average to .308.
Before today, Guerrero was batting .343 in his last 26 games.
Third base coach Willie Randolph, filling in for John Russell, had an aggressive send with Jones. Nix overran the ball and Jones scored from first base on a single over the shortstop's head. Randolph waved him around without hesitation and Jones never broke stride.
Guthrie has held the Nationals to three hits over five innings. Brandon Snyder's error gave them two unearned runs.
Guthrie hasn't walked a batter and he's struck out four. He's retired seven in a row since the error. Unfortunately, his pitch count has risen to 84 through the fifth.
Update: The bullpen gates swung open after the bottom of the sixth, and reliever Jim Johnson took a few steps on the field before turning around. Guthrie was still on the mound.
Guthrie was allowed to complete seven innings today. He's allowed two unearned runs and five hits, walked one and struck out four. He threw 108 pitches and could win for the first time since opening night in St. Petersburg.
Koji Uehara is warming now and will pitch the eighth.
Snyder has a single and double today as he tries to atone for the error. Both hits have gone to the opposite field, which isn't unusual for Snyder.
