Not putting "fun" in fundamentals (updated)

The Orioles haven't been particularly sharp in the early innings tonight. They put runners on first and second with no outs in the first inning on Robert Andino's bunt single and an error. Andino popped up another bunt, but this one cleared the mound. Nick Markakis failed to advance the runners, flying to left field. With Vladimir Guerrero at the plate, Andino broke too soon for third base and got caught in a rundown. So much for that rally. Second baseman Ryan Adams made a diving stop of Mark Ellis' ground ball with two outs in the second inning, but instead of getting up on his knees and making the throw, he did a 360 and threw wildly from the seat of his pants. Ellis was given a hit, and he took second on the error. Of course, Kevin Kouzmanoff followed with a run-scoring single. You knew it was coming. Craig Tatum and Andino walked with one out in the third, and Adam Jones bounced an RBI single into left field. Josh Willingham's throw skipped past catcher Kurt Suzuki, but Andino held at second base. Markakis lined to third - with Andino diving back to second and avoiding the added embarrassment of being doubled off - and Guerrero struck out swinging. Oakland took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on Willingham's two-out single, but again, starter Brad Bergseen had good reason to shake his head. Coco Crisp reached on a leadoff single on a ground ball up the first base line that Mark Reynolds knocked down, but couldn't field cleanly. Bergesen has thrown 33 strikes among his 48 pitches, and he's struck out four batters. Update: Bergesen couldn't give the Orioles six innings tonight. Coco Crisp delivered a tie-breaking single with two outs in the sixth, and Bergesen was removed after a walk. Bergesen kept pounding his fist in his glove as manager Buck Showalter headed toward the mound, and he held the glove to his mouth as he walked to the dugout, as if not wanting anyone to read his lips while venting. Bergesen is charged with two earned runs and three total. All the runs scored with two outs. He allowed nine hits and threw 102 pitches, the same amount as Chris Tillman last night in 4 1/3 innings. Bergesen hasn't completed six innings in four of his last five starts, the exception being his four-hit shutout at Tropicana Field. As he left the field tonight, and later as he stood in the dugout, he didn't look like a pitcher who was confident that he'd make his next start. He can't help but wonder.
